Magnum's exhibition blindstamp and Inge Morath Estate blindstamp in the margin lower right, "Inge Morath Foundation"/Magnum's Copyright stamp on the reverse. LITERATURE William Manchester (ed.), In our Time. The world as seen by Magnum photographers, London 1989, p. 384; Kurt Kaindl (ed.), Inge Morath. Fotografien 1952–1992, Salzburg 1992, p. 12, 65. One of Inge Morath's first assignments as a Magnum member took her to London, where she shot a photo reportage of the residents of the Soho and Mayfair districts for 'Holiday Magazine'. The portrait of the wealthy Eveleigh Nash (1873–1956) with her chauffeur in Buckingham Palace Mall is one of Morath's most famous pictures. Already a publisher since 1902, Nash worked with such prominent authors as Arthur Conan Doyle and Jane Austen. About ten years before this photograph was taken, she had published her memoirs under the title 'I liked the life I lived'. Morath's multi-layered composition seems to have two perspectives with different vanishing points. Moreover, Nash is intertwined with the background in her open limousine, with parts of the body providing the frame for secondary characters: The chauffeur, the two male passers-by and the pedestrians on the avenue are the protagonists of these mise-en-scènes. Since framing always corresponds to demarcation, social relations are also reflected in this pictorial structure. *Item is fully Taxed Deutsch: Silbergelatineabzug, geprintet 1989 auf halbmattem "double-weight" Papier 50,7 x 60,5 cm, in ausgezeichnetem Zustand. Etwa zehn Jahre vor dieser Aufnahme hatte sie ihre Memoiren unter dem Titel "I liked the life I lived" veröffentlicht. *Vollbesteuert.

Inge Morath (1923-2002) was born in Graz, Austria. After studying languages in Berlin, she became a translator, then a journalist and the Austrian editor for Heute, an Information Service Branch publication based in Munich. All her life Morath would remain a prolific diarist and letter-writer, retaining a dual gift for words and pictures that made her unusual among her colleagues. A friend of photographer Ernst Haas, Morath wrote articles to accompany his photographs and was invited by Robert Capa and Haas to Paris to join the newly founded Magnum agency as an editor and researcher. She began photographing in London in 1951 and joined Magnum as a photographer in 1953. While working on her own first assignments, Morath also assisted Henri Cartier-Bresson from 1953 to 1954, becoming a full member in 1955. In the following years, Morath traveled extensively in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Her special interest in the arts found expression in photographic essays published by a number of leading magazines. After her marriage to playwright Arthur Miller in 1962, Morath settled in New York and Connecticut. She first visited the USSR in 1965. In 1972 she studied Mandarin and obtained a visa to China, making the first of many trips to that country in 1978. Morath was at ease anywhere. Some of her most important work consists of portraits, but of passers-by as well as celebrities. She was also adept at photographing places: her pictures of Boris Pasternak's home, Pushkin's library, Chekhov's house, Mao Zedong's bedroom, artists' studios, and cemetery memorials are permeated with the spirit of invisible people still present.
