      J. MOREL (1769-1808), Fruit still life, around 1780, Pencil

      Est: €600 - €800

Jan Evert Morel (around 1769 Amsterdam - 1808 ibid.): Fruit Still Life with Mediterranean Fruits, c. 1780, Pencil Technique: Washed Pencil on Paper Inscription: Lower right signed: "J E Morel". Date: c. 1780 Description: Even though biographical information on Jan Evert Morel is sparse, his work testifies to a good education and high level of skill. Morel specialised almost exclusively in flower and fruit still lifes. In these works he is particularly influenced by Jan van Huysum, who was one of the best painters in this genre in the first half of the 18th century. His influence extended far into the Biedermeier period. Huysum's drawings and watercolours were not only preparatory studies for his still lifes, but also served as independent works. In the drawings, he often used a watercolour technique that, although oriented towards the line framework, developed a structure all of its own beyond it. It seems to lie over the drawing like a second layer, like a second still life, and thus creates a special plastic charm. This is precisely what Morel will have followed in the present drawing. The watercolour is not inserted to accentuate the drawing, but in part forms its own shapes that go beyond the outlines. This complementation brings about a spontaneous liveliness that creates a dynamic play of light, especially in the monochrome of the sheet. Verso: Fragment of a coloured still life Keywords: Fruits, Fruit, Study, Interior, 18th century, Classicism, Still Life, France,

Morel. f. 1801. 90 x 66 cm. Provenance: - Dorotheum, Vienna, 14.4.2005, Lot 154. - European private collection. MOREL, JAN EVERT (1777 Amsterdam 1808) Blumenstillleben mit Pfirsichen, Weintrauben und Kirschen. 1801.
