    • MATÍAS MORENO GONZALEZ (1840-1906). "UNA DUEÑA COMPLACIENTE" (c. 1870, Toledo).
      Oct. 07, 2021

MATÍAS MORENO GONZALEZ (1840-1906). "UNA DUEÑA COMPLACIENTE" (c. 1870, Toledo).

      Est: €1,000 - €2,500

Oil on board. Signed and monogrammed. According to a description of the time, it "depicts the interest of a mistress as she observes the impressions of a lover reading a letter she has been the bearer of". This is one of two versions of the original work, which he presented at the Paris Salon of 1870 and which were only known from a photograph that Moreno himself took at the time, having remained unknown since then: one of them ended up in Boston, perhaps through the London dealer Martin Colnaghi, Guardi and Continental Gallery, who had bought one of the replicas from him. The interior is the same as that of another of the artist's masterpieces, "Una oveja entre lobos" (1868-1882, private collection), i.e. the Archive in the Upper Chapter House of Toledo Town Hall, a painting he also presented at the Paris exhibition. From then on it became one of his most important works and was shown at other exhibitions, such as the Exhibition at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid (9 December 1880). Reference literature: María Rosalina Aguado Gómez, "El pintor Matías Moreno y González (1840-1906)", Madrid, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, 2013, pp. 212, 349, 403, 474 (unpublished dissertation). 24 x 18.5 cm (unframed).

MATÍAS MORENO GONZÁLEZ (Madrid, 1840 - Toledo, 1906). "Patio of the Lions of the Alhambra", 1882. Oil on canvas.

      Est: €2,500 - €3,000

MATÍAS MORENO GONZÁLEZ (Madrid, 1840 - Toledo, 1906). "Patio of the Lions of the Alhambra", 1882. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 56 x 47; 80 x 71 cm. Matías Moreno was a Spanish painter, sculptor and copyist. He initially studied at the School of Fine Arts of San Jorge in Barcelona during the years 1854-1856, and continued at the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. To complete his training he attended the Prado Museum, where he copied Rubens, Van Dyck, Titian, Veronese and, above all, Velázquez. He began to attend the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts in 1864 and was awarded a third class medal for Portrait of Miss J. M. (probably Josefa Martín, his fiancée). In 1866 he obtained a teaching position at the Institute of Toledo and a consideration of third medal at the National Exhibition for his painting Alfonso the Wise in the conquest of Cadiz, which is related to a contest promoted by the Academy of Fine Arts of Cadiz in 1865 with the same theme. Linked to the city of Toledo, he traveled it accompanied on occasions by his friends Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer first and later by Ricardo de Madrazo. In 1870 he was appointed correspondent of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, and became a member of the Provincial Commission of Monuments. That same year he presented two works to the Paris Salon. Around 1873 he restored "The Burial of the Count of Orgaz", by El Greco, and on this occasion he made some copies of the Cretan artist. He also made copies of other authors of which the Prado has numerous examples. His work evolved from an eclecticism full of anecdotes to a nuanced naturalism, such as "Los dos sueños" or "Ensayo al órgano", with which he obtained a second class medal at the National in 1881. In 1902 he went on to direct the Escuela Superior de Artes Industriales and to devote himself to sculpture, and obtained a third class medal at the 1904 National Exhibition.
