Waldlandschaft mit einer Eiche an einem Weiher. Lithographie auf gewalztem China. 21 x 29,7 cm. (19)05. Unten links signiert "Moulijn". - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

A self-portrait; A portrait of the artist's wife, Henriëtte Moulijn-Haitsma Mulier oil on panel and oil on canvas, 31,5x24 cm and 34,5x27 cm In 1887, Simon Moulijn completed his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam, where he befriended other Dutch artists like Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig (1866–1915) and Richard Roland Holst (1868–1938). After graduating, Moulijn tried to find his own style. He was mostly influenced by Symbolists, for example Jan Toorop (1858–1928), and the dynamic evolutions of French modern art. From 1892 onwards, Moulijn’s style developed into a stylistic simplification of nature; in this matter he was heavily influenced by the literature of the Belgian Symbolist Maurice Maeterlinck (1862–1949): ‘His mysticism compelled me to transform nature into something barbaric.’ Moulijn’s biggest artistic success was his solo exhibition in 1896 in the Maison de l’Art Nouveau of the famous Parisian art dealer Siegfried Bing (1838–1905). In 1902 Moulijn married the poetess Hester Jacoba Haitsma-Mulier (1877–1948). Together, they moved to Laren, North Holland, where they lived in d’Elegantier, a house they themselves designed. Later on the family moved to Rotterdam, where Moulijn taught at the Rotterdam Academy of Visual Arts. At the end of his career in 1936, Moulijn was knighted in the Order of Orange-Nassau and received an honorary exhibition at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam. the first signed with initial and dated 'M/'40' (centre right); the second signed with initial and dated 'M/'45' (centre left) and annotated 'geschilderd/te/Papendrecht 1945' (on the reverse) Exhibited: -Assen, Drents Museum (26 February-16 April 1989)/Dordrecht, Dordrechts Museum (6 May-18 June 1989)/Venlo, Goltzius Museum (20 August-15 October 1989), 'Simon Moulijn (1866-1948): schilderijen, tekeningen en grafiek', cat. nos. 15 and 16.
