Edward Moulthrop Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1916 - d. 2003

American artist Edward Moulthrop, born in 1916, had a major impact on the American wood turning movement. He bought his first lathe in his teens, and taught himself how to use it to create his works. Later, Edward Moulthrop's artwork was created using large cutting tools, and a lathe, which he designed to accommodate the use of large pieces of wood.

Artist Edward Moulthrop preferred to create his pieces using damaged, diseased, or rotted wood, as it created unique patterns on the surfaces of his woodenware. He would treat the wood by soaking it in polyethylene glycol for long periods of time, to help keep it from cracking and to bring out the material's natural beauty. Edward Moulthrop wood bowls for sale include large vase and sphere-shaped pieces inspired by his own visions. Browse vintage and modern woodenware for sale online and find the right earthy piece to complete your collection.

SIGNED ED MOULTHROP WOODEN TURNED TULIPWOOD BOWL VASE

              Est: $2,000 - $4,000

This is a beautifully turned tulipwood bowl crafted by Ed Moulthrop (American, 1916-2003). The bowl highlights the fins knots and grains of the tulipwood. Signed on the underside and identifying the wood type. "Born in Cleveland, Edward Moulthrop earned a B.A. degree in architecture in 1939 at Case Institute of Technology and an M.F.A. at Princeton University in 1941. Trained as an architect, Moulthrop is a self-taught woodturner and a major figure in the contemporary woodturning movement in America. He creates enormous architectonic vessels made of woods indigenous to the southeastern region of the country, where he lives and works. He particularly favors rotted wood, which, when turned, reveals striations on the vessel's surface. To produce his vessels, Moulthrop uses mammoth cutting tools of his own design, a large-scale lathe he also made, and polyethylene glycol. Moulthrop has received many awards, including two medals from the American Institute of Architects in 1978 and 1980 and the Georgia Governor's Award in the Arts in 1981." Kenneth R. Trapp and Howard Risatti Skilled Work: American Craft in the Renwick Gallery (Washington, D.C.: National Museum of American Art with the Smithsonian Institution Press, 1998) The max diameter is 11 1/2" and the mouth is 4 1/8". Est: $2,000 - $2,400

Edward Moulthrop (American/Georgia, 1916-2003) turned burlwood "Glory Bowl," made of highly figured Georgia Pine with dark striations, in a cylindrical form with broad curved and out-turned rim. Signature and inscription to underside: "Ed Moulthrop Georgia Pine Pinus Taeda 017831" with stamped artist's cipher. Measures 12 1/2" diameter x 6 1/4" H. Biography: Ed Moulthrop was a self-taught woodturner, known as the father of modern woodturning. His interest in wood began as a child and he bought his first lathe when he was a teenager. Moulthrop received his undergraduate degree from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio in 1939 and his graduate degree in architecture from Princeton University in New Jersey in 1941. After completing school, he taught architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and later practiced as an architect. Wood remained a hobby during his time as an architect. In the 1970s, he resigned from architecture to pursue woodturning professionally. Moulthrop was most famous for his large-scale turned bowls, made from domestic woods, usually spherical or elliptical with polished clear finishes and he designed and built most of his equipment to accommodate the large size of his pieces. His work is exhibited in many musuems including the Smithsonian, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Renwick Gallery, White House Collection of American Crafts, and Museum of Arts and Design, among others.
