        Aaron Mountz (Pennsylvania 1873-1949), an important carved bird perched atop a barrel, initialed on base AWM, retaining its original surface, 15 1/2" h. This is one of the largest works by Mountz known and possibly the only signed example.         DESCRIPTION: Folk art carved dog attributed to Aaron Mountz. Chip carved soft wood with a dry finish. Aaron Mountz (1873-1949) was a lifelong resident of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania and learned to carve wood as a boy from Wilhelm Schimmel. Includes a photograph of a boy that per the consignor is believed to be holding this example. MEASUREMENTS: 6-1/2" wide x 2" deep x 6" high. CONDITION: Loss to one front foot, missing toes to two back feet. Missing tail.

        Aaron Mountz (1873-1949), Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, active 1890-1900 Formed in the round with articulated face, ears and tail 63/4in. long NOTES Aaron Mountz lived in Condoguinet Creek, near Carlisle, Cumberland County, about a mile from the residence of Wilhelm Schimmel. As a young boy, Mountz was inspired by Schimmel's exceptional talent as a carver. Mountz's best works came from his early teens and twenties and are characterized by consistent and deliberate cross-hatching.
