      OTAKAR MRKVIČKA 1898 - 1957 - PRAGUE NOCTURNES

      Est: -

Themes of mysterious Prague corners are among the most sought-after subjects of Otakar Mrkvička's work. This important representative of the interwar avant-garde, known mainly for his art reviews, was a close contemporary of J. Štyrský and Toyen, and his work is gradually coming to the fore. Initially heavily influenced by the constructivist aesthetic of the Nineties, he made a transformative transition to poetic primitivism in the 1930s. The visually striking mysterious corners capture the atmosphere of a lonely night or a night walker in these tendencies. The world of Mrkvicka's alleyways shrouded in dark night, from which lonely faces emerge, is a world of veiled mystery in an age that often demanded many secrets. Technique: lithography, paper, Signed: sign. lower right: Otakar Mrkvička 43

      OTAKAR MRKVIČKA 1898 - 1957 - NELSON MINE

      Est: -

Otakar Mrkvička's father worked as a photographer in Příbram, where he took valuable contemporary records of the mining town and corners that no longer exist. Perhaps the impulse to create a work documenting the mining accident in the Nelson III mine near Osek was born there. A mining accident took place in 1934 - due to austerity measures, some regulations were not followed very carefully and an explosion occurred in which 144 people died. The Ossetian tragedy was also reflected in the poetic work of Bertold Brecht. Most of the sacrifices were made only in 1938. In the 1930s and 1940s, Otakar Mrkvička went through a darker phase of his work with a strong social line, which continued until the occupation and resonated with its urgency during the war. Otakar Mrkvička painted the dark corners of the city from which illuminated faces emerge like ghosts, which the author paints with the care of a collector of human destinies. It is not surprising that the mining accident shook him so much that he also printed the miner's death mask in his artwork as a warning memento mori. Technique: oil on canvas, Signed: sign. lower right: OM 38

    • OTAKAR MRKVIČKA 1898 - 1957 (ATTRIBUTED) - HEAD OF A WOMAN

      OTAKAR MRKVIČKA 1898 - 1957 (ATTRIBUTED) - HEAD OF A WOMAN

      Est: -

Poetically stylized female head with a hairstyle of tightly groomed hair in the style of the twenties with her face ingeniously cut into light and shadow. Such a dual motif is inextricably linked to the work of Otakar Mrkvička and is reflected in his various works, such as the book cover of František Kožík's short story "I'm Looking for Maria Romanová" published in 1941. It is a very well thought out composition that was created long before it became a painting. We currently know of countless variations in head processing with related Cubist modeling. The woman's head is an elaborate and painterly mature painting which tells of the beauties of the world and the charm of a woman's face. Mrkvička was active as a painter, illustrator, cartoonist, editor, art critic, set designer and typographer. Mrkvička grew up in the 1920s to have a real personality of extraordinary creative energy and a unique creative boom, which can be compared to Karel Teige, with whom he worked closely at the time. It is said that he became a member of Devětsil in 1922 and less than a year later he was a recorder and one of the pillars of this revolutionary association. The work is accompanied by a professional restoration expertise of Mgr. David Frank ak. mal. rest. Technique: Oil on canvas on cardboard, Signed: Lower right "OM"

Mrkvička was active as a painter, illustrator, cartoonist, editor, art critic, set designer and also a typographer. In Mrkvička, a real personality of extraordinary creative energy and a unique creative boom grew up in the 1920s, which can be compared to Karel Teige, with whom he worked closely at that time. It is said that he became a member of Devětsil in 1922 and less than a year later he already took the records of their meetings and became one of the pillars of this revolutionary association. From the opinion of PhDr. Rea Michalová Ph.D .: "The judged painting "Cat in the Window" bears all the hallmarks of Mrkvička's mature work, which has always managed to preserve the poetics of "all the beauties of the world" and the youthful charm of the early twenties. It can be perceived as a certain quintessence of the poetry of the "home fireplace", the festive and at the same time completely unpretentious well-being, the magical world of everyday things, seen with childish enthusiastic eyes, with the indisputable, advanced ability of color "magic" and artistic reduction , about which he sings in Werich's famous song "Cat on the Window". Technique: Oil on canvas on cardboard, Signed: Lower right with initials "OM"

      OTAKAR MRKVICKA (1898-1957): STREET CORNER

      Est: -

1942 39 x 31.5 cm (h x w) Oil on wood panel. Exhibition label on reverse: Jos. R. Vilimek Gallery, exhibited in 1943, catalog no. 13. Street Corner, a painting from the period shortly after the outbreak of World War II, was exhibited at the Vilimek (now Spala) Gallery in 1943 together with other works featuring similar themes with mysterious parts of Prague. An important exponent of the interwar avant-garde who was primarily known for his art critiques, Otakar Mrkvicka was a close contemporary of Jindrich Styrsky and Toyen and the importance of his work is gradually receiving more recognition. Initially strongly influenced by the Constructivist aesthetic of Devetsil, in the 1930s his work transitioned towards poetic primitivism. In spite of its small size, this visually very exceptional work follows this trend to capture the atmosphere with a figure walking at night. When the painting was exhibited, Honzik wrote: "The nighttime wold of Mrkvicek's paintings is not intrinsically terrifying. Poverty is generously blurred by the darkness, like the magic of festivities veils it in daylight paintings. Even the vice we sense in the darkness following the pale harlot, does not have a sanatic face like in Félicien Rops. It is just one form of the world that the painter included in his paintings with wonderment, like a butterfly collector who welcomes the horrific death's-head hawkmoth to his collection with the same love as if it were a blue butterfly." Material research by Jana Záhorová. Ref.: Catalogue of Galerie Jos. R. Vilímek, 1943. Starting price: 450 000 CZK (17 647 EUR)
