Alfons Mucha Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Commercial artist, Illustrator, Photographer, b. 1860 - d. 1939

Alfons Mucha was born in Czechoslovakia in 1860, and studied art in Paris and Munich. Alfons Mucha's drawings were often his own perceptions of the ideal female form. His poster Gismonda, made for actress Sarah Bernhardt's play of the same name, used subtle pastel colors and lighting that accented the crown of her head. Alfons Mucha's drawings also focused on the hair, eyes, and lips of the women portrayed. Mucha continued this revolutionary technique throughout his career, creating theater posters, advertising materials, and magazine covers. A series of Alfons Mucha's paintings of Czech and other Slavic people, entitled Slav Epic, was restored after WWII and placed in the permanent collection at Moravsky Krumlov's castle. Alfons Mucha's art for sale includes illustrations, posters, and canvas paintings. Delve into interesting theatrical and artistic periods by viewing magnificent posters for sale online, and purchase a piece for your home.

Alphonse Mucha's La Pater with Numerous Highly Decorated Pages

    Est: $25,000 - $35,000

This wonderfully illustrated volume is Alphonse Mucha's Le Pater. The work was published in Paris by Champenois et Piazza et Cie in 1899. The work was limited in publication to 510 copies of which this is number 57. Mucha felt that this work was his finest achievement as an illustrator and it was first religious illustrations. The work is bound in full skin with midnight blue binding. The work is printed on Japan in color on special paper in the shape of the manufactures of the Marais. There is also a suite in black on China. It was said of this work: “At this auspicious time, the turn of a century, Mucha wanted to deliver to future generations his reflections upon human life and man’s place in the universe. He wished to present the way that leads man to a gradual ascent to the divine ideal. He determined to fulfill these goals in his own version of the Lord’s Prayer.” (Mucha/Art Nouveau, p. 233) The work contained a page that stated the Lord's prayer, a page of Mucha's interpretation of the verses, and his own philosphical response. Mucha illustrated each line of the Lord's prayer using his designs (moon, eight pointed stars) and inspirations from Kabbalah and Masonic philosophy. Mucha represented God as a mysterious shadow representing him as everywhere but invisible. The illustration of the Woman is to represent love, which descends from Heaven. There are three complete suites of plates, 1 on Japan paper, 1 on special paper à la form of the Marais, and 1 on China paper. There is the portfolio cover front (illustrated) and back (blank) bound in. To the beginning of the work there are two title cards (no image), two no. 57 stamp pages (small circle), three dedication pages (no image). At the end there are three pages explaining the plates and paper type (decorative border), three pages of the publication imprint (small design), and one page with a decorative stamp illustration reading pense et lis. Often the first page presented will have only the design and no printed text for these extra pages. There are three of each fully illustrated image or prayer page. Twenty-three pages in triplicate (or 69 individual pages), with the first of these pages consistently in black and white. Seven of these are the full black and white illustrations. Sixteen are ornately illustrated prayer pages.

    Est: $17,000 - $20,000

Alphonse Mucha Job 1896 24.5 h x 18.125 w in (62 x 46 cm) This is Mucha's single most famous work, though it seems impossible that such flamboyant effort would be devoted to selling cigarette papers. But the exotic tendrils of her hair conjure up the fractal whorls of smoke from an idle cigarette. The image is breathtaking; the beauty intoxicating. Photographs are seldom able to capture the metallic gold paint used for the hair, which gleams and radiates in the light, delivering an experience not unlike a religious icon. Imp. F. Alphonse Mucha Flirt 1900 24.25 h x 10.75 w in (62 x 27 cm) "Flirt" was a brand of biscuit sold by Lefevre-Utile, but that becomes almost irrelevant to admirers of this classic depiction of love blossoming. Indeed, it's almost impossible to avoid falling in love with the Victorian elegance on display, with romantic effusiveness held at bay—with difficulty!—for the moment. You can just barely see the baker's L-U logo patterned on the damsel's dress, and doesn't that just take the biscuit? This is the variant reprinted after the 1900 World's Fair, announcing their Grand Prix win. Imp. F. • Alphonse Mucha, Lorenzaccio

    Alphonse Mucha, Lorenzaccio

    Est: $10,000 - $12,000

Alphonse Mucha Lorenzaccio 1896 82.25 h x 29.75 w in (209 x 76 cm) Sarah Bernhardt adopts the pose of a pensive Lorenzo the Magnificent (1449-1492), the most powerful of the Medicis, in this play by Alfred de Musset. In the drama, Lorenzaccio struggles to save Florence, which had grown rich during his reign, from the grip of a power-hungry conqueror. Mucha represents this tyranny by a dragon menacing the city coat of arms (top left); Lorenzo has closed the book he was reading to ponder his course of action. Bernhardt adapted this 1863 play for herself, and the new version, represented by this poster, opened December 3, 1896. "Never afraid to tackle a male role, Bernhardt made Lorenzaccio into one of the classic roles of her repertoire" (Lendl/Paris, p. 18). This is the two-sheet larger format of Mucha's famed Lorenzaccio. Imp. F. • Alphonse Mucha, Le Pater

    Alphonse Mucha, Le Pater

    Est: $10,000 - $12,000

Alphonse Mucha Le Pater 1899 lithographs in bound book portfolio 16 h x 12 w x 1 d in (41 x 30 x 3 cm) Consisting of a series of seven drawings, Le Pater is considered to be Mucha's printed masterpiece, an intense visual study of the Lord's Prayer. The seven verses of the prayer are represented here through Byzantine symbolism, and are executed and decorated in the very best Art Nouveau style. "In the context of Mucha's oeuvre, this artistic and literary work combines in a fortuitously unique way his philosophy, imagination, talent, and skill reflects his past achievements in decorative design, and is also a precursor of his future artistic developments... The ornamental pages of Le Pater allowed Mucha to represent the symbolism of the Lord's Prayer in the extravagantly decorative style that made him famous... Without exception, the French critics perceived Le Pater as a work of art in its own right, noteworthy for its imagery and vision... In the increasingly materialistic world, it is important for man's spiritual growth to contemplate works that are inspired by well-known text, and have the ability to enrich and invest it with additional meaning. Le Pater is one of such works; it challenges the imagination and the mind, and, as Mucha would have it, leads man towards the Light" (Le Pater, p. 10-20). This complete collection consists of the seven illuminated verses, the text and illustration pages, as well as the title and Amen page. This is edition No. 198 of 510 copies. Literature: Mucha/Art Nouveau, 72; Le Pater; PAI-XCI, 355 This work will ship from Lambertville, New Jersey.

Alphonse Mucha Lottery of the Union of Southwestern Moravia 1912 50.5 h x 38 w in (128 x 97 cm) "A forlorn school girl and the weeping figure of Slavia, symbolizing the mother country, make a heart-rending appeal to the public to buy lottery tickets to support a local school system. One of the major grievances the Slav minorities had under the Austrian regime was the ruthless pressure of the authorities to eradicate the local language and culture. The state provided schools in German only; if the population wanted to have their children taught in their own language, they had to build and run the schools themselves. This lottery was one of the means to obtain such funds" (Rennert/Weill, p. 342). The image offered here is the central part of the final poster with text. V.
