WVZ Mahlfeld G 1246, mit leicht abweichenden Maßangaben. Paul Müller-Kaempff 1861 Oldenburg – 1941 Berlin Landschaftsmaler. 1880–83 Studium an der Akademie in Düsseldorf bei Hugo Crola und Heinrich Lauenstein. 1883–86 Studium an der Akademie Karlsruhe unter Theodor Poeckh und Gustav Schönleber. 1886–1889 Meisterschüler beim norwegischen Landschaftsmaler Hans Frederik Gude an der Berliner Akademie. 1887 erste Ausstellungsbeteiligung in Oldenburg. 1889 Beginn der freischaffenden Tätigkeit als Künstler sowie Studienreisen an die Ostsee (Fischland und Ahrenshoop).1892 Bau eines Hauses in Ahrenshoop und Gründung der Künstlerkolonie Ahrenshoop. Dort 1894 Eröffnung der Malschule und Pension "St. Lucas". In den folgenden Jahren mehrere Studienreisen an verschiedene Orte an der Ostsee, dort Kreierung von Postkartenentwürfen. 1904–28 Mitglied des Oldenburger Künstlerbundes. 1906 zum Professor ernannt. 1911–16 und 1920–22 zugleich in Berlin und Ahrenshoop ansässig. 1919 Verkauf der Malerschule und 1922 Verkauf seines Ahrenshooper Hauses. 1938 letzte Ausstellungsbeteiligung in Rostock.

Paul Müller-Kaempff, Old Bridge in Tenerife

Signed and dated lower left: P. Müller-Kaempff. / 1914 According to a handwritten inscription on the back of the painting, it depicts the "old bridge at Lago, Laguna" on Tenerife. In 1913, Paul Müller-Kaempff travelled to the Canary Islands. The voyage was linked to a lucrative commission from the Oldenburg-Portuguese shipping company for 24 large-format paintings. The company had acquired the steamship "Tenerife" that year and Müller-Kaempff, who was born in Oldenburg, was to paint views of the eponymous island for the ship's salons. The present work was unknown until the present day. We would like to thank Dr Konrad Mahlfeld, Magdeburg, for his kind support in cataloguing this lot. He will be including the work as number G 1344 in the forthcoming supplement to his catalogue raisonné of works by the artist. The ship and thus the majority of the paintings were lost in the first world war. However, some small-format pieces with motifs from Tenerife have survived.

Die Arbeit wird unter der Nummer G 854 in den Nachtrag des Werkverzeichnisses aufgenommen. Paul Müller-Kaempff studierte von 1882 bis 1886 an den Akademien in Düsseldorf und Karlsruhe. Von 1886 bis 1888 war er in Berlin Schüler von H. Gude. Bilder von ihm befinden sich u.a. in den Museen in Oldenburg, Kiel und Rostock. Der Künstler war später als Professor tätig. Viele seiner Motive fand der Künstler in Ahrenshoop und seiner näheren Umgebung. Er gehörte der dortigen Künstlerkolonie an. Die Arbeit dürfte um 1920 entstanden sein (PD Dr. Konrad Mahlfeld).

Schließlich entdeckte er während eines Aufenthaltes auf dem Darß das abgelegene Fischerdorf Ahrenshoop, wo er ein eigenes Pensions- und Atelierhaus eröffnete. From Askart.com: Paul Muller-Kaempff (1861-1941) studied at the Academy in Dusseldorf, before he became a student of Schonleber at the Academy in Karlsruhe, from 1883 to 1886. He then studied at the studio of Hans Fredrik Gude at the Academy in Berlin in 1888. He moved to Hamburg, where he was appointed professor in 1906. Muller-Kaempff was one of the most popular and innovative landscape painters of his time. His works were collected by the German royalty as much as by collectors from South America and all over the world. He is also known as the founder of the artist colony Ahrenshoop that is still active today. He died on December 5, 1941 in Berlin, Germany. From Wikipedia: Kaempff received his first training from 1883 to 1886 at the Dusseldorf Academy of Fine Arts, then at the Academy of Karlsruhe under de:Gustav Schonleber (1851-1917) and finally at the Berlin Academy in the studio of Hans Gude (1825-1903). In 1905 he married his student, Else Schwager, and was appointed professor a year later. From 1908 he lived in Hamburg, later becoming a member of the Hamburg Artists Association. In 1904 he and his wife were founder members of the Oldenburg Art Society. Muller-Kaempff was a successful landscape artist. He produced watercolors, pastels and drawings as well as furniture designs and a multitude of postcards. He was also an accomplished lithographer and produced bird illustrations for the revised edition of Naumanns - Naturgeschichte der Vogel Mitteleuropas. During his lifetime his works were acquired by museums in Rostock, Oldenburg, Kiel and Hamburg, and bought by numerous private collectors as far afield as Argentina and China. Prince Eitel Friedrich, the second son of Emperor Wilhelm II, acquired several of Muller-Kaempff's pieces for the imperial court in 1908. Muller-Kaempff stayed in touch with his former fellow-student, Georg Muller vom Siel, and visited him at Dotlingen in June 1908 On a hike in 1889 with his friend, Oskar Frenzel (1855-1915), they discovered the secluded fishing village of Ahrenshoop Muller-Kaempff was so inspired by the isolated hamlet that he moved there, built himself a house in 1892, and started the painting school of St. Lucas in 1894. Fellow artists followed his lead, and soon the artists' colony was home to Anna Gerresheim (1852-1921), Elisabeth von Eicken (1862-1940), Friedrich Wachenhusen (1855-1925), Fritz Grebe (1850-1924), Heinrich Schlotermann (1859-1922), Theobald Schorn (1866-1913) and Hugo Richter-Lefensdorf (1854-1904).
