    JOSEF MÜLLNER (Vienna, 1879 - 1968). "Rape of Hippodamia". Patinated bronze. Signed. Presents some wear in the patina. Measurements: 92 x 53 x 32 cm. The splendid sculpture that we now bid represents the convulsive moment in which the centaur Eurito abducts Hippodamia the day of her wedding with Pirito. This is how Ovid narrates it in the Metamorphoses in Book XII (210-335:) "(...) For you, the most bestial of the bestials, Eurytus, your heart burned both for the wine and for the sight of the bride, and a drunkenness reigned that doubled lust. Suddenly the tables are overturned and sow confusion at the banquet and the newlywed is forcibly abducted, seized by the hair. Éurito takes Hippodame, the others the one that each one liked or could: vivid picture of the plundering of a city. The house is filled with women's screams (...)". Josef Müllner's work was part of the sculpture event in the art competition of the 1936 Summer Olympics. Among his students were, among others, Rudolf Schmidt and Bruno Zach.

    (1879 Baden bei Wien - 1968 Wien) Raub der Hippodameia durch den Kentauren Eurytion Bronze, dunkel patiniert. Sign. u. dat. 1919. Gießerstempel "ERZGIESSEREI A.G. WIEN". Monumentale, vollplastische Figurengruppe auf einem ovalen Sockel mit szenischer Darstellung aus der griechischen Mythologie (nach Homer, Diodor und besonders Ovid). Stilistisch verbindet die Bronze Einflüsse des Neoklassizismus mit denen des Jugendstils und der Wiener Secession, deren Mitglied Müllner 1906-1911 war. Bereits 1910 wurde Müllner Professor an der Wiener Akademie, 1922 Leiter der Meisterschule für Bildhauerei. In seinem frühen Oeuvre bis ca. 1920 schilderte er oft symbiotische Darstellungen von Mensch und Tier, stellte Motive aus der antiken Mythologie dar, mit Vorliebe auch Mischwesen wie hier. H. 92 cm. Dark patinated bronze. Signed and dated 1919. Foundry stamp "ERZGIESSEREI A.G. WIEN".

Kapital eingerissen, Randläsuren, Vign. stockfleckig). Der österreichische Bildhauer Josef Müllner (1879-1968) wurde 1910 Professor an der Wiener Akademie, wo er von 1927 bis 1929 Rektor und danach acht Jahre Prorektor war. Die Abzüge eines unbekannten Photographens zeigen Skulpturen seiner Schüler, darunter H. Gaertner, O. Hafenrichter, E. Kubiena, A. Schindler, M. Schwedler u. R. Ullmann. - Photolegende auf Spiegel mont. In der ob. Ecke auf dem Passpartourt num. - Es fehlt Photo Nr. 19. Die Silbergelatine-Abzüge (ca. 17 x 11,5 cm) zumeist in den Rändern etwas ausgesilbert (Nr. 1 stärker), die Passpartout mit kl. Gebrauchsspuren u. zum Teil leichten Flecken.
