Artist Biography: Stonington's oldest working painter/writer/sculptor/house designer, Emily was born in 1904. Educated at The Art Students League in the 1920's she studied painting with Richard Lahey and Winold Wiess and sculpture with Leo Lentelli. Moving to Deer Isle in 1938, Emily spent her early years redesigning local churches and incorporated mosaic work in the design. In 1940 she published the book 'Small Potatoes' with Charles Scribner & Sons about the life of a small boy in Stonington. Her paintings and small clay folk sculptures depict the life style of the small fishing village where she lives. Her favorite creative expression, and the one of which she is most proud, are the houses she began designing and contracting in 1959. There are 40 of them built on Deer Isle. Emily has received numerous awards and honors including honors for her architecture from Design International, which was an international competition judged in Berlin. She is listed in Who's Who in American Women and served as the first woman on The National Commission of The Arts, where in 1955 she lobbied for arts commissions for public buildings. Her paintings are included in the collection of The Brooklyn Museum of Fine Arts, The Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, Maine, The University of Maine at Orono, The Portland Museum of Art and various private collections including that of Elizabeth Noyce. Emily opened her own Gallery at her waterside home and studios in 1997.
