signed and dated: E.R. Mullins / 1876 and with a silver title plaque inscribed TERRACOTTA GROUP BY E.R.MULLINS. 1876. /John Eward Taylor Collection/ bought at Christies / July 1st 1912 terracotta, on an ebonised wooden base, with a glass dome CATALOGUE NOTE This is an early work by Mullins and a very rare survival of an elaborate terracotta group. It is unknown in any other versions and shows the influence of his continental training. The subject is identified by an annotation in the Christie's catalogue of 1912. In 1884 Mullins exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery a similar subject, Morn, waked by the circling hours, but the relationship between these two compositions is not clear.
