PATRICK MUNG MUNG born c.1948 NANGAMAN COUNTRY, 2006 natural earth pigments on canvas 80.0 x 100.0 cm bears inscription verso: artist's name, size and Warmun Art Centre cat. WAC 676/06 PROVENANCE Warmun Art Centre, Turkey Creek, Western Australia Private collection, Sydney This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Warmun Art Centre which states: ‘Piccanniny Gorge (Nawkarlwin) in Purnululu (Bungle Bungles). ''That's all that sandy hill country with green grasses. The old people used to live there in the early days like a village. Nawkarlwin is the blackfella name of this place. Nawkarlwin is the frog". This place is known for the place where the brown frogs bury themselves in the sand. The Aboriginal people who lived and worked on Texas Downs Station would go on holiday to Purnululu (Bungle Bungles). They would dig for these frogs and cook them up on the coals. The frog has white, tasty meat like the kuntarril (fish). Patrick Mung Mung says that many of the old people used to live in this place in the early days. They hid from the gardiya (white fella) and had a good life until two local men were tricked into showing the gardiya the secret track into the gorge. The old people were chained together and brought back to Turkey Creek. "I don't know why they did that to them old people - they had a good life out there.”’ This work is located at our Melbourne Gallery © Patrick Mung Mung/Copyright Agency, 2020

  • Patrick Mung Mung - Yunurri
    Jun. 23, 2020

    Patrick Mung Mung - Yunurri

    Est: $5,000 - $7,000

Patrick Mung Mung, the son for renowned Warmun teacher and elder George Mung Mung, creates works influenced in their composition and use of traditional ochres by the previous generation of Warmun artists, including Rover Thomas and Paddy Jaminji. Born at Spring Creek (Yunurri), Patrick worked as a stockman at Texas Downs Station and the nearby stations in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia for many years. When his father died in 1991, Patrick took on his father's role as the senior artist, responsible for the Law and culture of his extended family. Patrick was instrumental in the establishment of the Warmun Art centre during the late 1990s. In this work, Patrick has painted Yunurri, across the other side of the Old River from Texas Downs Station. This is yawal yawal country (black soil country), which becomes very boggy when wet. There is a spring and many big black rocks, referred to in the Gidja language as Jewidirrin.

    Purnulula

    Est: $12,000 - $15,000

Purnululu (the Bungle Bungle ranges in the East Kimberley) was PatrickÕs grandfatherÕs and great grandfather's country. Patrick Mung Mung was the son of senior Gija leader George Mung Mung a renowned teacher and community leader. He grew up on Texas Downs Station and was amongst the last to leave when the stockman life ended in the 1970s. He began painting following his father's death in 1991 and developed his own distinctive style influenced by the generation of Warmun artists who preceded him. His paintings are noted for multiple perspectives, dynamic energy both in and of the landscape, and a delightful soft earthy palette.
