Sebastian Munster's Cosmographiae uniuersalis Lib. VI - One of the Monumental Illustrated Books of the 16th Century

    Est: $24,000 - $32,000

MÜNSTER, Sebastian (1488-1552). Cosmographiae uniuersalis Lib. VI. In quibus, iuxta certioris fidei scriptorium traditionem describuntur. Basel: Heinrich Petri, March 1552 [colophon]. Comparable: Christie's, 2017 - $21,250; Christie's, 2012 - 18,750 GBP. "Folio (12 x 7 1/2 in.; 30.5 x 19.1 cm). Letterpress title within historiated woodcut border, woodcut portrait of the author on verso, 14 double-page atlas maps, including 2 world maps, 3 views of Vienna (signed "HRMD"), Worms (signed "ISD") and Heidelberg, each printed on two leaves and intended to be joined, approximately 1,000 woodcut text illustrations including 54 text maps, printer's woodcut device at the end. BINDING/CONDITION: Title laid down, obscuring portrait of author on verso, moderate browning and marginal foxing, one or two marginal tears occasionally touching the image, closed tears on page 25, the last two leaves with early repairs affecting the text, dampstaining in lower inner margins in the last two quires. Seventeenth-century sheep, the spine in six compartments with raised bands, edges stained red; scuffed and scraped, endpapers renewed in the nineteenth century. ONE OF THE MONUMENTAL ILLUSTRATED BOOKS OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY. First published in 1544, Münster's Cosmographia became the most popular work of its kind, teaching "nearly three generations of laymen most of what they know about the world beyond their native places" (Strauss). As a description of the whole world, Cosmographia provided an encyclopedia of general knowledge. The author's preface "promises the prospective reader an exhaustive survey of all that is significant and interesting in his world. 'The art of cosmography,' he begins, 'concerns itself not only with the countries, habitations, and lives of the various peoples of the earth, but also with many other things, such as strange animals, trees, metals, and so on, things both useful and useless, to be found on land and in the sea; [also] the habits, customs, laws, governments of men, … the origins of countries, regions, cities, and towns, how nature has endowed them and what human inventiveness has produced in them, [also] what notable things have happened everywhere…' " (Strauss). Its success was also due to the fascinating woodcuts (over 1,000) by Hans Holbein the Younger, Urs Graf, Hans Rudolph Manuel Deutsch and David Kandel. The present edition published in March of 1552 shortly before Münster's death on 26 May at Basel, is a reprint of the definitive 1550 edition. It contains the same 14 double-page maps and has the identical text maps (Karrow 58/135-188). The 1550 edition also introduced the town views, which were unusually accurate, as they were "based on first-hand information gathered from local officials of each town or place described, and were some of the earliest large-scale plans of cities to be published" (The World Encompassed, 272). As such, Cosmographia remains a key source of social history for that period. Additionally, the editions of 1550 and thereafter contain Münster's second world map, an oval projection cut by David Kandel, which replaced the Ptolemaic version that had appeared in earlier editions. There are separate sections on Africa, Asia, and "De novis insulis, quomodo, quando & per quem" between pages 1099 and 1113-a description of America including accounts of the voyages of Columbus, Vespucci, Magellan, etc. Map 14 of America, "Tabula nouarum insularum" is in Burden's state 5. "He was one of the first to create space in the woodblock for the insertion of place-names in metal type. The map's inclusion in Münster's Cosmographia … sealed the fate of 'America' as the name for the New World … North America is not shown as accurately as the southern half of the continent, it had to a large extent been neglected so far by explorers. When Giovanni di Verrazzano … passed by the Outer Banks of the Carolinas in 1524, he mistook Pamlico and Albemarle sounds for the 'Oriental Sea' that led to Cathay and the rich Spice Islands. Here Münster perpetuates the error and through the success of this book provided the impetus to the exploration of the region" (Burden). PROVENANCE: Nineteenth-century ownership inscription of E. de Freville with Latin motto ". Munster, pub. 1550 - Sea Monster and Animal Tableau (Famous Chart, Munster's Monsters); Monstra Marina et Terrestria

    Est: $2,500 - $4,500

About the engraving: This is one of the most famous charts of mythical sea monsters. The monsters were derivative of Olaus Magnus's Carta Marina from 1539. It reflects the Renaissance attitude towards the unknown lands beyond civilization. The image is one of the most sought after curiosities of the 16th century. One vignette shows a galleon trying to outrun one monster by throwing their cargo overboard, while one sailor takes sight with a musket. It features beasts of land and sea. While many are the stuff of fantasy, many are based upon depictions from Scandinavian sailors and whalemen encounters. The monsters included are whales, giant lobsters, sea serpents (perhaps oarfish), and possibly an Orca and walrus. Description of the work: This very old woodcut is from Sebastian Munster's Cosmographey oder beschreibung aller Länder, Herrschafften, fürnemmsten Stetten, geschichten, gebreüchen, handtierungen &c. It was published in Basel in 1550. The work was a massive chronicle of all the geographical knowledge of the world to that point. The work included world maps as well as views of smaller cities and woodcut illustrations of historical subjects, mythology, natural history and ethnography. It was the first work to show America in its "correct" continental form and "sealed the fate of 'America' as the name of the New World." (Burden 12) It was also the first to name the Pacific Ocean. Sebastian Munster (1489-1552) was a German cartographer, cosmographer, and a Hebrew scholar. He also became a Franciscan monk at an early age. Munster's Cosmographia was the first work of scientific based knowledge in the German language.

Sebastian Munster Typus Orbis Universalis (from Cosmographiae Universalis Lib. VI In Quibus Iuxta Certioris Fidel Scriptores...) [1572] copper engraving on paper with hand-coloring 12.25 h x 15.75 w in (31 x 40 cm) First published in 1544, Cosmographia was one of the most popular 16th century books, with about 40 editions in a century, including translations into Czech, French, Italian, and Latin. This oval projection map was from the Latin edition. Continents are outlined, with a large Northwest passage above the North American continent, which shown with the east coast nearly separated by the Sea of Verrazzano. The mythical islands of Calensuan and Grisonum are shown near the location of Australia. The demand for Cosmographia was largely driven by the wood-engraved maps; the block for this map was cut by David Kandel with his initials in the lower left corner. Münster reworked his 5 earlier maps of the Rhine-region (see lot 460) to 3 maps, this one being the last one, covering Brabant, the southern part of Holland and the province of Utrecht. As this map is much cruder, the influence of Van Deventer is no longer recognizable. First published in the 1545 ed. of Münster's "Geographia universalis [...]". Münster showed the course of the Rhine in 5 maps, this one being the last, covering the lower course; showing o.a. the cities Antwerp, Brussels, Roermond, Cologne, Bonn, etc. After 1542, Münster reworked the 5 Rhine-maps to just 3 (see lot 461), thus this map only appeared in 2 editions. Extracted from Münster's 1540 ed. of "Geographia universalis [...]". Latin text on verso (numb. 38). - Ref. Brabantia ducatus 2. - Karrow 58/110.

    Munster’s Cosmographia with over 100 Maps (1560)

    Est: $32,500 - $40,000

Complete Edition of Cosmographia with over 100 Maps & Views Sebastian Munster, La Cosmographie Universelle, Contenant la Situation de Toutes les Parties du Monde, avec Leurs Proprietez & Appartenances, published 1560. Black & white. Sebastian Munster probably had more influence in spreading geographical knowledge throughout Europe in the mid-sixteenth century than any of his contemporaries. His Cosmographia contained not only the latest maps and city views, but also included an encyclopedic amount of detail about the known, and unknown, world and its history. Henrich Petri, step-son of Sebastian Munster, was the publisher of Munster's Geographia and Cosmographia. After Henrich Petri's death in 1579, his son Sebastian Petri took over the publishing business and commissioned a completely new set of woodblocks for the Cosmographia. Over the years, the text was enlarged and new maps were added. This French edition includes maps of the world, ancient world, the 4 continents, 8 regional maps, plus over 1000 woodcuts including 2 long folding views (of Vienna and Heidelberg), 37 double-page plans and views, and 66 smaller maps and views. Also included is the famous plate of Munster's Monsters, engravings of exotic animals, and a portrait of Sebastian Munster as the frontispiece. Of particular importance is Munster's map of the western hemisphere, La Table des Isles Neufues, lesquelles on Appelle Isles d'Occident & d'Indie, which is one of the most Important sixteenth century maps of the New World. The influence of Marco Polo's 13th century explorations in Asia are evident with the 7448 islands in the North Pacific and Zipangri (Japan) shown only a short distance off the western coast of North America. The North American continent is very oddly shaped without a California landmass and the eastern region is nearly bisected by a body of water, known as the Sea of Verrazzano. The Yucatan is still shown as an island, Cozumel is named nearby as Cozumela, and the lake at Temistitan is connected to the Gulf of Mexico. South America has a large bulge on the western coast, the Amazon River is very short, and cannibals inhabit the continent shown with the name Canibali next to a gruesome vignette with human limbs. The map is very decorative with Magellan's surviving ship Victoria appearing in the Pacific. This example of the Cosmographia is complete. The title page has been erroneously updated with a cut-out of the publisher's imprint from the 1555 edition, which has been glued onto the page, however the colophon correctly states the publication date of 1560. Small folio. Frontispiece; title page; dedication page; [16] pp.; 14 double-page maps; 1337 pp. with over 1000 woodcuts and 105 maps and plans. The pages of this example have been ruled. Handsomely rebound in full mottled leather with embossed frame on covers; five raised bands with two black leather title labels on spine; and new endpapers.
