        Property from a Private Collection, Savannah, GA Description: Christopher P. H. Murphy (Savannah, 1869-1939), Architectural Detail, Watercolor on Paper, unsigned with Telfair Academy label verso, titling it as 'Architectural Detail' c. 1929-1939, matted and framed. Frame size: 22 1/2 in. x 16 1/2 in. Exhibited: Christopher P.H. Murphy, A Retrospective, Telfair Academy, June 18th-September 1, 1985. Christopher Murphy Jr. was a notable 20th century Savannah, Georgia artist. Murphy's artistic education started early as both of his parents were respected Savannah artists, and continued with formal training at the Art Students League. His superior technical skills allowed him to work in a variety of mediums and subject matter and he is best known for his city and landscape scenes of his home town Savannah. He was an active member of the Savannah Art Club and taught art classes around town. During his career his work was exhibited at the National Academy of Design, Art Institute of Chicago, New York Watercolor Club, American Watercolor Society, Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Whitney Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Southern Art League. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Morris Museum and the Telfair as well as in various private collections. Measurements: Height: by sight 13 in. x Width: 7 5/8 in. Condition: Good condition, light foxing to edges. A largely self-taught artist, was born in Savannah on December 2, 1869, to Christopher and Mary Murphy, who had immigrated to Savannah from their native Ireland. The younger Murphy joined his father's commercial painting business at the age of nineteen. Although he did not take formal art lessons, Christopher amassed a library of art books, which he used in order to practice drawing and painting. As he gained more skill, the family business evolved to include sign painting, paper hanging, fresco painting, faux techniques, and decorating. In the 1890s, he met the artist Lucile Desbouillons and the two married in January 1902, when Christopher returned from military service.
