        Est: $3,000 - $4,000

The Quarterly Review. London: John Murray, 1809- 1967 A nearly full run of the Tory answer to the Edinburgh Review. Founded by a small group of intellectuals and writers including Sir Walter Scott, the Quarterly Review is famous for publishing scathing literary reviews—including the article that allegedly snuffed out the poet John Keats, according to a mocking stanza in Lord Byron's Don Juan. This periodical includes reports on various other literary works, including Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, as well as commentary on a wide variety of topics from landscape gardening, politics, Napoleon's exile, Classical scholarship, and British colonial expeditions around the world, making it an indispensible source for contemporary views on every aspect of British life during its long print run. 245 volumes, octavo. Mostly contemporary full or half calf over boards, many of the later bindings in Althorp library bindings (a few covers or spine panels detached).

        Est: $1,500 - $2,000

Voyage of H.M.S. Blonde to the Sandwich Islands in the Years 1824-1825. BYRON, George Anson (1789-1868). London: John Murray, 1826. 4to., (10 6/8 x 8 6/8 inches). Folding aquatint frontispiece of the Great Volcano of Peli, at Hawaii (spotted at folds), 3 engraved portraits, 8 fine aquatint plates after Robert Dampier (one or two marginal spots), one plan of Kilauea volcano, one folding map of the voyage (spotted at fold), and one woodcut. Modern half green morocco gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. Provenance: Aquatints with the discreet marginal blind library stamps of the Royal United Service. "One of the most gracious acts that one country has ever extended to another" (Sir Peter Buck, reported by Forbes) First edition. Byron, a cousin and heir to the famous poet Lord Byron, was commissioned by the British Government to make this voyage to the Hawaiian Islands in order to return the bodies of King Kamehameha II and Queen Kamamalu who had died tragically of measles during their state visit to England. Edited by Maria Graham, Captain Byron's cousin, and later Lady Callcott, from official documents and "the diary of the Reverend Richard A. Bloxam, the chaplain who collected the various papers. Much interesting information is given on Hawaii and its natural history and inhabitants, but the work speaks ill of the American missionaries" (Hill). Abbey Travel; Borba de Moraes I:139; Forbes 630; Finding Paradise: Island Art in Private Collections 37; Hill 231; Sabin 100816. Guidance: Bonham's, April 6, 2009 - $4,575.

        Est: $600 - $900

SACHÉ, JOHN EDWARD and MURRAY, COLIN (1809-1898) [Native office sweeper, Calcutta] [18]89. Albumen print on printing-out paper, 10 5/8 x 8 5/8 inches (270 x 220 mm), on original gray card mount, signed and dated in the image, Saché's name slightly trimmed. Excellent, even tones, a few areas of tape residue on the rear of the mount and one on the front, which in no way detract from the superb image. This magnificent portrait, with the noble-looking native office sweeper standing with his broom in front of a map of Calcutta, in an office of the British Raj, about to attack a pile of papers carelessly strewn on the floor, is compelling and (probably not deliberately) somewhat ironic. BYRON, George Gordon Noel (1788-1824). The Bride of Abydos. A Turkish Tale. [Bound with:] -- The Giaour, a fragment of a Turkish tale ... seventh edition, with some additions. London: John Murray, 1813. 2 works in one volume, 8° (218 x 132mm). 2 engraved plates by E. Finden, one a view of Harrow after C. Stanfield, the other of Missolonghi after W. Purser. (Occasional light browning.) Slightly later green calf gilt, edges gilt (rubbed, upper joint tender at head). Provenance: PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR (publisher's clerk's ink inscription to flyleaf of first work 'From the author' to:) -- SAMUEL ROGERS (manscript corrections in his hand, in pencil to p.4, and in ink to p.47 inserting two missing lines) -- W. Hamilton (a.l.s. receipt acknowledging return to Hamilton from the Byron Loan Exhibition at the Royal Albert Hall, dated 30th June 1877) -- bookseller's clipped description pasted to flyleaf -- Michael Foot (a.n.s. loosely inserted presenting 'A Byronic gift for a true Byron lover' to:) -- Ian Gilmour. FIRST EDITION, THE FIRST VARIANT OF THE FIRST ISSUE, without the errata leaf, p.47 with 20 lines; p.60 has the eighth line numbered 720. The errors are corrected in Samuel Roger's hand, and the volume was presumably bound for him (he is the dedicatee of The Giaour) with the insertion of two relevant plates. The later political provenance of Michael Foot and Ian Gilmour is fascinating; Lord Gilmour wrote The Making of the Poets: Byron and Shelley in Their Time (2002) and was chairman of the Byron Society from 2003 until his death in 2007. Randolph, p.29-30 (Abydos), p.28 (Giaour); Wise Byron I, pp.85-87 (Abydos), pp. 83-84 (Giaour). A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY.
