    SAMUEL A. MURRAY (AMERICAN, 1869-1941), PLASTER BUST OF A YOUNG MAN indistinct signature, dated '97', indistinct inscription on front of base plaster painted beige Note: Samuel A. Murray was an American sculptor and educator, but he is best known as a protege of Thomas Eakins. He studied under Eakins at the Art Students' League of Philadelphia and was a favored student who later became his assistant and an instructor. The two artists shared a studio from 1892 to 1900 and sometimes painted and sculpted from the same models. They were lifelong friends, and Murray often served as a model for Eakins's paintings and photography.

    SAMUEL ALOYSIUS MURRAY (PA, 1869-1941) - Standing Portrait of John Mapes Dodge (1852-1915), Inventor, Industrialist and Founder of The Link-Belt Engineering Co, Philadelphia; cast bronze, marked on integral base with the subject's name, signed at back and dated 1904. Also marked by the Roman Bronze Works, NY, that same year. Dodge's wife was the sculptor Josephine M. Kern, Murray was the protege of Thomas Eakins. 16" tall, 5 3/4" diam at base. Good condition, buttery patina.
