§ William Staite Murray (British, 1881-1962) Study of Trees inscribed lower left " to my friend Jim Ede, W Staite Murray 1934" sepia watercolour (A/F) h:45 w: 57 cm William Staite Murray was a British studio potter born in London, 1881. He attended pottery classes at Camberwell School of Art and Crafts between 1909 and 1912, and after the First World War, he set up his own pottery business in Rotherhithe as a self-taught potter. Staite Murray was increasingly influenced at this time by expressive Japanese ceramics, with a more spiritual approach to his craft, giving his pieces individuality and character. His reputation and following as an influential potter grew, and in 1926 he was made Head of the Ceramics Department at The Royal College of Art, whilst also holding a successful solo show on Bond Street. In 1955 he was appointed Trustee of the National Arts Council, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), where he spent the last twenty years of his life. Just before his death a very successful exhibition of his work was held in London in 1957.

William Staite Murray (British, 1881-1962) Bowl, Yeoman Pottery, abstract Vorticist design, circa 1915-1919 incised 'YEOMAN W.S.M.' (to the base) 14.5cm diameter, 5cm high. Provenance: The Margot Coatts Collection; A. W. Coysh Collection. Illustrated: Malcolm Haslam, William Staite Murray, Crafts Council, 1984, p.74, illustration 2. These two bowls are rare examples of William Staite Murray's early work at the Yeoman Pottery, and he noted at a later date that 'experiments of that time in abstract painting and abstract sculpture interested me', which can clearly be seen in these works. Alongside the Vorticist artist Cuthbert Fraser Hamilton, Murray set up the Yeoman Pottery in 1915 and it would continue until just after the end of the war in 1919. The work produced by these artist-potters at the pottery shows how closely they were associated with the artistic avant-garde of the period. The slightly more muted colours of Lot 61, and its heavily abstract figural composition shows an assimmulation to the Vorticist movement, and possibly the influence of David Bomberg's work of this period. Lot 62, stronger in colour and conforming more to cubist elements perhaps shows influences of the work of artists such as Edward Wadsworth.

William Staite Murray (British, 1881-1962) Vase, circa 1930s, trailing trees/irises in copper glaze impressed potter's seal 29.5cm high. William Staite Murray created a number of vases through the 1920s and 1930s, which were exhibited widely, most notably at the Lefevre Gallery, London, and were given names such as 'Mist, Early Morning', 'Wheel of Life' etc. It is probable that this vase is one of those 'named' pieces. This vase bears similarities to 'Mist, Early Morning' exhibited at William Paterson's Gallery in 1929, described as stoneware with black and rust-coloured decoration on grey ground (now in York Art Gallery Collection). It also has similarities to 'Autumn Winds' (Photograph: Greville, Maidenhead), probably circa 1939.

A similar stoneware vase/jar with cream glaze can be seen in a photograph of a Red Rose Guild exhibition stand, Houldsworth Hall, Manchester, 1923 (see Malcolm Haslam, William Staite Murray, Crafts Council, 1984, p.19).
