        Dec. 14, 2021

        GRIGORIJ MUSATOV 1889 - 1941 - SLEIGH RIDE

        Est: -

Grigorij Musatov was a painter of gentle, almost dreamlike color with strong impressionist tendencies. Painting "Sleigh ride" carries traces of colourful swirl in subtle curly strokes and has simillar storytelling features like paintings of Marc Chagall. Born in Russia, Grigorij Musatov was part of the wave of immigrants who came to Czechoslovakia in 1920. Thanks to a recommendation from his friend, Jan Zrzavý, he quickly joined the Czech art scene and became a member of Umělecká Beseda, regularly exhibiting with the art association. In the 1930s his style primarily shifted towards Impressionism; his paintings were loose and dreamy, corresponding to idyllic landscapes and poetic figures. Technique: Oil on canvas, Signed: Lower right "G. Musatov"

        Dec. 14, 2021

        GRIGORIJ MUSATOV 1889 - 1941 - A JEWISH FAMILY

        Est: -

Originally a Russian painter, Grigory Musatov came to Bohemia with an emigrant wave in 1920. Thanks to the recommendation of his friend Jan Zrzavý, he assimilated on the local art scene and became a member of the Umělecká beseda, with which he regularly exhibited. Grigory Musatov used Impressionist tendencies to create extremely humanly records of experiences shrouded in a dreamy haze. They often reflected children's joy and naivety, or in stark contrast to the weight of human existence and social criticism. Such is the case with the record of the Jewish family, a subject to which he has repeatedly returned, as he found it very difficult to bear the horrors of war and persecution of the Jews, because Musatov's wife Věra was from a family of Orthodox Jews. The poster of his last exhibition from 1941 bore the obligatory warning "Jews are not allowed to enter". Technique: Oil on canvas, Signed: Lower right "G. Musatov"

        GRIGORIJ MUSATOV 1889 - 1941 - MAN WITH A MELON

        Est: -

The works of Grigory Musatov must be understood in a broader context, including his life in Russia. As the son of icon painter Grigory Musatov, he showed artistic talent from an early age. Since the 1920s, his style has changed significantly, the contours are slowly receding and he attaches much more importance to illuminated phenomena mediated through impression. The themes they choose for their paintings reflect social themes and are often mythical. Technique: Oil on canvas, Signed: Lower right "Gr. Musatoff"

        Est: -

A man with a bull bears the typical features of Grigory Musatov's work. The work is colorful and presents a theme inspired by Russian folklore and mixes it with a dreaminess and a hint of exploring the famous archetype. A hint in the background is also indicated by a pasture with fences and farm buildings. Technique: Oil on canvas, Signed: Lower left "G.M."

        Est: -

The impressionist painting of subtle to dreamy colors dates back to the 1930s, influenced by naivety, primitivism or Russian folk art. Grigory Musatov conveys memories, dreams and experiences shrouded in a subtle haze of curly colored curls. On the back is a confirmation of authenticity from Grigory Musatov's daughter Eleonora Musatova: "Grigory Musatov's painting "Sower " from about 1933 comes from the estate of Andrei Terentevich Serebryakov, a longtime friend of my father. Grigorij Musatov, Oil on Canvas, Wide Landscape, around 1940

        Est: €2,400 - €3,000

Oil on canvas Czech Republic, around 1940 Grigorij Musatov (1889/99-1941) - Russian-Czech painter Signed lower right 'Gr. Musatov' With handwritten inscription on the stretcher with details on artist, work and dating Two Czech exhibition labels on the stretcher Dimensions: 46.5 x 54 cm Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany Typical composition painted by one of the leading Eastern European representatives of avant-garde art in the early 20th century; Musatov's landscape motifs fetch up to €8,200 at international auctions Grigorij Musatov was fascinated by landscape motifs, particularly in the sense of dreamlike scenes following the tradition of Marc Chagall. A few compositions depict however classical subjects such as still lifes and landscapes which the artist probably had seen in his direct environment. The present painting is a beautiful example of this particular artistic interest and shows an atmospheric landscape with fields and acres. It seems to date back to the time around 1940 and is clearly inspired by the impressionist style. The painting is signed lower right 'Gr. Musatov'. The paint surface is slightly stained within the areas of the sky and appears a bit browned. Besides, it shows faint marks, where the frame has rubbed and a few tiny losses of paint are visible at the lower edge. The stretcher is fitted with two old exhibition labels. The size of the stretcher is 46.5 x 54 cm and the framed overall dimensions are 50.7 x 58.3 cm. Grigorij Musatov (1889/99-1941) Grigorij Musatov was born in Russia in 1889/99 and emigrated to the Czech Republic due to the revolution. The artist mainly painted provincial scenes and domestic motifs, but was also interested in the depiction of dreamlike landscapes inspired by Chagall. Musatov was mostly active in Prague and is considered one of the most important Eastern European artists of the early 20th century.
