Ca. Ø52mm, ca. 134g, both sides glazed, silver case, back with view to the enamel plaque and the automaton above, enamel painting of very fine quality, excellently preserved erotic scene, very likely workshop Jean (V) Mussard (1681-1754), Geneva, above the enamel plaque the automaton moves driven by the balance wheel, originally fitted with a fly or other insect flying back and forth above the lady's head (mechanism complete and intact, only the fly is missing), movement signed Jean Robert Michel, original champlevé dial with same signature, gilt hands (minute hand restored), in working order. The watch is a museum quality rarity and one of the rarest versions of an Oignon. Only a few examples are known in combination with this automaton. The enamel painting corresponds to the best Mussard quality produced at that time. A comparable object was sold for a record price of 32,000 Swiss Francs (https://www.cortrie.de/go/MQB) in Geneva. Another example with a fly was sold for 16,000 Swiss Francs (https://www.cortrie.de/go/PV9). The watchmaker Jean Robert Michel was listed in Paris from 1652. Another Oignon with enamel painting and his signature is in the Orlean Museum.

A rare, large "Oignon" - "Cimon and Pero" or "Caritas Romana" (Roman Charity) Case: brass, firegilt, back with polychrome enamelling: Cimon and Pero, scene attributed to the famous enamel painter Jean V. Mussard (1681-1754). Sides with painted pastoral scenes, polychrome enamelling. Dial: gilt, engraved, white enamel cartouches with black Roman numerals, central painting: polychrome enamel scene showing Diana, Goddess of the Hunt; single steel hand. Movm.: full plate movement, keywind, firegilt, signed, chain/fusee, Egyptian movement pillars, three-arm steel balance, pierced balance cock with finely engraved birds, fish and mascarons. Jean V. Mussard (1681-1754) Jean V. Mussard was one most notable enamel painters in the early 18th century. He took his inspiration from the works of the FrèresHuaud and specialised in religious scenes and the recreation of scenes such as the Roman Charity, which is the motif on this watch. These gilt metal and enamel pieces were usually produced for export. His son Jean-Antoine followed in his father’s footsteps and today their art can be found in some of the world’s most famous museums and collections. Jean Duhard In Tardy's Dictionnaire des Horlogers Français Jean Duhard is listed on page 203 as active between 1691 and 1718. Duhard married Marie Bourdain, the daughter of a Bordelaise watchmaker in 1688 and by 1704 they had six children. The Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Bordeaux owns a watch from the same time period as the watch we have here. The movement of the Bordeaux watch bears the signature of another watchmaker from Bordeaux, Pierre Cruzet; the enamel scenes, the portrait and the small cartouches have been most probably created bythe renowned enamellers Frères Huaud. The brothers, who specialised in recreating mythological paintings in their enamel art, came from their native Chatellerault in France to Geneva at a young age. Later they traveled to Berlin, where in 1686 they were appointed enamel painters to the Elector of Brandenburg. "Cimon and Pero" or "Caritas Romana" (Roman Charity) The philosopher and seer Cimon was sentenced to death by starvation. His daughter Pero was the only person allowed to see him in his prison and the guards checked her most carefully for foods whenever she came to visit. However, Pero nourished her starving father by secretly breastfeeding him. When Cimon survived for a long time apparently without any food, his goalers eventually found out how he was kept alive. Pero’s daughterly love and charity impressed them strongly and Cimon was pardoned and set free. This story became asymbol of Christian charity and from the 15th century on was frequently used as a theme in paintings. white neckcloth, blue sash and ermine-trimmed scarlet cloak, a column and trees in the background enamel, signed and dated on reverse,.Jean Mussard./ pinxit en May/ 1714, unframed oval, 48mm. (1 5/8in.) high Peter the Great was the fourteenth child of Alexei Mihailovitch, born May 30, 1672, from his second marriage to Natalia Naryschkina. He ruled jointly as Tsar with his brother Ivan V from 1682, under the regency of their sister, the Grand-Duchess Sophia. Upon Ivan's death in 1696, Peter was officially declared Sovereign of all Russia. During his reign, Peter undertook extensive reforms. He created a regular army and navy, subjugated the Church to the state and introduced new administrative and territorial divisions of the country. He paid particular attention to the development of science. Under Peter's rule, Russia became a great European nation. In 1721, he proclaimed Russia an Empire and was accorded the title of Emperor of All Russia, Great Father of the Fatherland and "the Great." He married twice and had 11 children, many of whom died in infancy. The eldest son from his first marriage (to Eudoxia Lopukhina, 1669-1731), tsarevitch Alexis, was convicted of high treason by his father and probably executed after torture in 1718. Peter died from a chill on January 28, 1725, without nominating an heir. His Lithuanian mistress, Catherine, whom he had married in 1712, succeeded him as Empress (Catherine I). He was buried in the Cathedral of the St. Peter and St. Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg. Peter's love of Western culture made him receptive to the skillful portraits offered by European artists, enamellists and miniaturists. In 1717, for example, he ordered from Charles Boit (1662-1727) 40 copies in enamel after the full-scale oil painted by Godfrey Kneller in 1698.
