  • Animal Locomotion – Plate 587 by Eadweard Muybridge – Copyright 1887
    Mar. 08, 2025

Animal Locomotion – Plate 587 by Eadweard Muybridge – Copyright 1887

    Est: $200 - $300

Eadweard Muybridge (English 1830-1904) Animal Locomotion – Plate 587, Copyright 1887, full margins under the mat Sight 9 in. x 13 in. Overall: 22 in. x 28 in. Eadweard Muybridge (9 April 1830 – 8 May 1904, born Edward James Muggeridge) was an English photographer important for his pioneering work in photographic studies of motion, and early work in motion-picture projection. He adopted the first name Eadweard as the original Anglo-Saxon form of Edward, and the surname Muybridge believing it to be similarly archaic. At age 20, he emigrated to America as a bookseller, first to New York, and then to San Francisco. Planning a return trip to Europe in 1860, he suffered serious head injuries in a stagecoach crash in Texas. He spent the next few years recuperating in England, where he took up professional photography, learning the wet-plate collodion process, and secured at least two British patents for his inventions. He went back to San Francisco in 1867, and in 1868 his large photographs of Yosemite Valley made him world-famous. In 1874 Muybridge shot and killed Major Harry Larkyns, his wife’s lover, but was acquitted in a jury trial on the grounds of justifiable homicide. He traveled for more than a year in Central America on a photographic expedition in 1875. Today, Muybridge is known for his pioneering work on animal locomotion in 1877 and 1878, which used multiple cameras to capture motion in stop-motion photographs, and his zoopraxiscope, a device for projecting motion pictures that pre-dated the flexible perforated film strip used in cinematography. In the 1880s, he entered a very productive period at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, producing over 100,000 images of animals and humans in motion, capturing what the human eye could not distinguish as separate movements. Muybridge spent much of his later years giving public lectures and demonstrations of his photography and early motion picture sequences, traveling back to England and Europe to publicize his work. He also edited and published compilations of his work, which greatly influenced visual artists and the developing fields of scientific and industrial photography. He returned to his native England permanently in 1894, and in 1904, the Kingston Museum, containing a collection of his equipment, was opened in his hometown.

Each with printed caption, number and Muybridge's copyright on plate. Title page with dedication by Muybridge to "Sir Fredk Leighton Baron P.R.A. with the homage of the author June 1889" and later dedication by Lord Leighton "To Linley Sambourne from an old friend. July 22, 1896" in pencil. Bound in half morocco, cloth-covered album (corners rubbed, some scratches) gilt morocco cover label "Animal Locomotion. By Eadweard Muybridge. 1872-1885. Plates. University of Pennsylvania". University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, 1887. Grolier, Truthful Lens, 123. Parr/Badger, The Photobook I, 52. This album features an important collection of Eadweard Muybridge’s groundbreaking “instantaneous photography,” a self-developed technique that enabled high-precision stop-motion images using an early rapid-acting shutter. Initially focusing on horses, Muybridge expanded his repertoire to include athletes, birds, lions, and camels, famously capturing the first image of a galloping horse with all four hooves off the ground in 1872. By 1885, he had amassed over 20,000 photographic negatives, comprising 781 sequential photo plates taken from multiple cameras positioned at carefully planned locations and angles, each illustrating a subject in continuous motion. Muybridge’s handwritten dedication on the title page to Frederic Leighton, one of Victorian England’s celebrated artists, underscores the influence of his movement studies on contemporary artists such as Thomas Eakins, Frederic Remington, Ernest Meissonier, Edgar Degas, and the French inventor Étienne-Jules Marey. Notably, Leighton passed away in 1896, the same year he gifted this particular copy to his “old friend,” the renowned Punch cartoonist Edward Linley Sambourne. The complete eleven-part work Animal Locomotion contains 781 numbered plates. The accompanying Author’s Edition, offered here, featured a removable subscription leaf that allowed subscribers to choose their preferred plates, resulting in varied content across different sets. This copy includes plates 3, 133, 152, 174, 187, 214, 279, 289, 347, 408, 465, 471, 565, 616, 626, 647, 659, 710, 721, 739, and 755. The exceptionally fine collotypes were printed by the Photo-Gravure Company in New York. – Edges of plates time-stained and with some moisture staining, images not affected, images very finely printed and in very good condition. - Sollten Sie detailliertere Zustandsberichte wünschen, kontaktieren Sie uns bitte. / Should you need more detailed condition reports, please contact us.

Original brown cloth portfolio, gilt titles to front board. Imprint to lower margin. MUYBRIDGE'S 360-DEGREE PANORAMIC VIEW OF SAN FRANCISCO. Often referred to as the "Patrician's View" of San Francisco. Muybridge captured the stunning views of the city from the observation turret in the unfinished mansion of Central Pacific Railroad tycoon, Mark Hopkins. He along with the other extravagantly wealthy men behind the CPRR, Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker, and Collis Potter Huntington, had built mansions near one another on California Street Hill (later Nob Hill). New York Historical Society curator Wendy Ikemoto observes: “Hopkins and Crocker both had panoramic observation towers built into their mansions, and Stanford had panoramic windows built. So, the panorama is in some ways the vision of a commercial king—a vision of monopoly, power, and control. And yet, Muybridge presents the opposite: The city is empty and desolate, and everything seems still. There are all these strange little interruptions to the sense of omnipotence that you would normally associate with a panorama.” Howes M-926; Mitchell, Kerrie. "San Francisco is a Ghost Town: The Story Behind Eadweard Muybridge’s Spooky Panorama"; Solnit, River of Shadows. Please note that conservation work has been done, and that conservation document is enclosed. This lot is located in Cincinnati.

Image: 24.5x30.3 cm (9¾x12"); sheet: 48.5x61 cm (19x24").Collotype from Muybridge's famous series of stop-action sequential photography, capturing the movements of men, women, children, horses, birds, lions, etc. Plate 507 shows a man working with an axe.Edweard Muybridge, 1830-1904, began his long career in photography in California, creating famous views of Yosemite and other scenic wonders. In 1872, Leland Stanford (one of the original "Big Four" and the president of the Central Pacific Railroad) commissioned Muybridge to employ his photographic expertise to help Stanford win a bet: establish that when galloping, a horse had all four legs off the ground at one time. Muybridge devised his sequential stop-action photography using a series of cameras the shutters of which were triggered by trip-wires as the horse ran by. Stanford won the bet, and Muybridge developed a new outlet for his photographic genius. Some twelve years later, under the auspices of the University of Pennsylvania, Muybridge began his major work in the field, his "Animal Locomotion," consisting in its entirety 781 plates reproducing some 20,000 negatives.

EADWEARD MUYBRIDGE (1830-1904) Pi-Wi-Ack, Valley of the Yosemite, Shower of Stars, Vernal Fall, 400 feet tall. Mammoth albumen print, the image measuring 16⅝x21⅛ inches (42.2x53.7 cm.), flush mounted, with the partial title and notation "No. 28" in ink on mount verso. 1872 Provenance: From the Collection of Dr. James and Debra Pearl Muybridge first photographed in the Yosemite Valley in 1867, when he produced over 250 views in whole-plate and stereoscopic formats. Before embarking on a second expedition in the summer of 1872, he advertised for subscribers to contribute towards the cost of the new series. Subscribers, one of whom was the eminent landscape artist A. Bierstadt, could choose forty images from the series for 100 dollars. Muybridge produced over 500 negatives between June and November 1872 in various formats. The list, produced in April 1873 by his new publishers, Bradley & Rulofson, announced fifty views 17x21 inches from his mammoth 20x24 inch negatives. These impressive views immediately attracted national and international acclaim and Muybridge was awarded the Vilenna Medal in 1874. Despite this attention it seems that far fewer prints survived than those of his competitor Carleton E. Watkins. During the 1870s the photographers Henry W. Bradley (1813-1891) and William H. Rulofson (1826-1878), who together operated a San Francisco photography studio, published a series of Eadweard Muybridge's views of Yosemite. Their inventory number for this image was 28.
