      Mathilde M. Mylander (American/Baltimore, 20th c.)

      Est: $7,000 - $10,000

Mathilde M. Mylander (American/Baltimore, 20th c.), "Life-Size Male Figure Holding Grapes and a Basin", bronze with verdigris patina, signed on self base, foundry mark of Roman Bronze Works, New York, h. 74 in., w. 20 1/2 in., d. 17 in. Provenance: Brown Family, Eastern Shore, MD; reputedly acquired Sotheby's. Note: In this lot, Mathilde M. Mylander, through Roman Bronze Works, has skillfully cast a beautiful male figure reminiscent of the famous Perseus with the Head of Medusa by Benvenuto Cellini (Italian, 1500-1571). Mylander, who was featured in both the 1936 and 1938 Annual Exhibition of Maryland Artists, has opted to represent a cluster of grapes and bowl in lieu of the Medusa head and sword. Established in 1897 by Riccardo Bertelli, a chemical engineer from Genoa, Roman Bronze Works was the first American foundry that specialized in the lost-wax casting method. In 1946, ownership of the foundry changed to the family of Philip J. Schiavo, whose grandfather started working there in 1902. Many of the most successful American sculptors have partnered with the foundry to create their works, including Frederic Remington, Daniel Chester French, Charles Russell, Bessie Potter Vonnah, and Anna Hyatt Huntington.
