    • Károly Nagy, Panel Painting, ‘Mese?‘, Hungary, 1983

Károly Nagy, Panel Painting, ‘Mese?‘, Hungary, 1983

      Est: €1,600 - €2,000

Acrylic paint on wood Hungary, 1983 Károly Nagy (born 1954) – Hungarian artist Monogrammed and dated at the lower right ‘NK 83’ On the reverse a label inscribed in handwriting and titled ‘Mese?’ Dimensions of panel: 49.5 x 69.6 cm Good condition This enigmatic panel painting by Hungarian artist Károly Nagy is titled ‘Mese?’ [Tale] and was made in 1983. Indeed the picture reminds of the fairy-tale of Hansel and Gretel, however slightly modified and presumably tracing back to a Hungarian myth. A girl is locked up behind bars in a house, while a humpbacked, hooded figure is positioned in the foreground. It is leaning on a stick, however instead of a hand the head of a snake is portrayed. While the interior of the prison is executed in white and black colors, the exterior surroundings are predominately colored in green. The night sky and the hissing cat as well as the shadowed face of the figure add to the uncomfortable atmosphere of picture. The work is monogrammed and dated at the lower right ‘NK 83’. On the reverse it is titled ‘Mese?’ and a label inscribed in Hungarian handwriting is stuck to the panel. The painting is in a good condition with signs of wear. The edges show minimal color abrasion where the frame has rubbed. Under UV-light a touch-up is visible in the area of the girl’s prison. The dimensions of the panel are 49.5 x 69.6 cm, while the framed dimensions are 55.2 x 75.3 cm. (nlu) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
