James Nakagawa Okinawa #17 Archival inkjet print 2008. From the 'Banta' series. Edition 1/15. Provenance: the artist. Framing donated by Pictura Gallery, Bloomington, IN. Okinawa #17 is part of Osamu James Nakagawa's (American, b. 1962) Banta series, which consists of hyper-real depictions of caves and cliffs on the coast of the Japanese island of Okinawa. The artist visited the cliffs and was struck by their beauty, as well as their violent history during WWII. By the end of his visit, Nakagawa had amassed a collection of thousands of digital images, which he pieced together over the course of months to form the highly detailed works in the Banta series. Nakagawa was born in New York City, raised in Tokyo, Japan and returned to Houston, Texas as a teenager. He received a MFA in photography from the University of Houston and is currently an associate professor of photography at the Henry Radford Hope School of Art at Indiana University. Nakagawa received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2009, and Higashikawa Photo Festa's New Photographer of the Year Award in Japan in 2010. His photographs are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, George Eastman House, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston among others. 30" x 10"
