Rosella Namok Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1979 -

Born in 1979, Rosella Namok is an Ungkum speaker who grew up in Lockhart River. In 1999 she burst onto the art scene with a highly successful exhibition in Sydney, which launched both her reputation and that of the Lockhart River Art Gang. She now enjoys a celebrated reputation among national and international art collectors.

Namok’s lands are to the south of Lockhart. Her totem is the Rosella. The artist’s language is the Aankum Group. Rosella began painting as a young girl when helping her father to decorate the bodies of dancers with ochre paints for traditional ceremonies. Her father was the painter of dancer’s bodies for tribal ceremony at Lockhart River and she would often help him smearing clay onto the body and working it with the fingers to create the appropriate designs. The marks or patterns used on the body and on the ceremonial ground are highly symbolic.

These ancestral markings are still strong elements in Rosella’s art today, together with other traditional symbolic patterns learnt from the sand drawing style taught to her by her grandmother. In Rosella Namok’s work we observe both decorative finger painting as well as “scraping” of the surface. “I paint mainly about clan groups, country, family and what people do” says Namok. Other subjects include the seasons – the dry and the wet – and the rainforest. I also paint about the stories people tell me about, the spirits and carnival journeys to other communities.”

Rosella’s work is included in all the major Australian galleries and in some international collections. Her work is often viewed as taking Aboriginal art in a new direction, linking the traditional with the modern. She was ranked among the 50 most Collectable Artists in Australia by Art Collector magazine for 2001 and 2002. In 2013 two of her paintings were used as backdrops to a performance of Stavinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring by the Houston Ballet company in Texas.

You make a nice hot fire...hot tea...sit down and listen to them yarn...plus ’ee nice night...sit down...they can yarn all night. I just listen...listen that mob...those old girls yarn...they tell you about how they been small and how they grow up...it’s good...listen them yarn." Rosella Namock Rosella Namok describes herself as a ‘modern artist’. Her painting engages traditional themes but she explores them in her own distinctive style, bearing the markers of a modern sensibility. The ‘culture and stories’ of which Namok paints revolve loosely around several narratives. They are stories of her social and physical or natural environment featuring events such as hunting and fishing expeditions, weather patterns of rain and wind, or the stories of Kapay and Kuyan, the two opposing moieties that govern marriage relations in Namok’s Ungkum community. These tribal moieties were brought together into one community under the governance of the Christian missions that were established in the Lockhart River area in 1920. Also apparent in Namok’s work are themes relating to traditional knowledge of country including kinship relations as well as tribal law in relation to the both the individual and their community. In fact, it was her wish to explore and establish her correct lineage, her ‘right place’ within the whole, that initially sparked much of the imagery that takes shape throughout the entire scope of Namok’s art. This piece is a fine example of an Australian Aboriginal artwork.

In this work, part of Namok's Stinging Rain series, the artist works with wet paint on wet, employing various implements to scrape back sections of the painted surface. In this work, rhythmic parallel lines are placed obliquely to the vertical. The razorsharp gashes to the painted surface have been created by using a fine edged scraping tool. This work relates to fishing from a boat on the river during a downpour. According to the artist, ‘It’s always good when it starts to rain ... it stings your face and stirs up the fish underneath.’ Fireworks Gallery, QLD Cooee Art, NSW

Rosella Namok describes herself as a ‘modern artist’. Her paintings engage traditional themes but she explores them in her own distinctive style, bearing the markers of a modern sensibility. The ‘culture and stories’ which Namok paints revolve loosely around several narratives. They are stories of her social and physical or natural environment featuring events such as hunting and fishing expeditions, weather patterns, or the stories of Kapay and Kuyan, the two opposing moieties that govern marriage relations in Namok’s Ungkum community in Far North Queensland. These tribal moieties were brought together into one community under the governance of the Christian missions that were established in the Lockhart River area in 1920. Also apparent in Namok’s work are themes relating to traditional knowledge of country including kinship relations as well as tribal law. In fact, it was her wish to explore and establish her correct lineage, her ‘right place’ within the whole, that initially sparked much of the imagery that takes shape throughout the entire scope of Namok’s art.
