        ANNETTE NANCARROW Peinado.

        Est: $1,500 - $2,500

ANNETTE NANCARROW Peinado. Oil on linen, circa 1950. 760x760 mm; 30x30 inches. Signed in oil, lower right recto, titled in pencil on the stretcher verso, and with an abstract study in oil verso. With the artist's wood frame with applied gimp braid trim. Provenance: Private collection, New York. Nancarrow (1907-1992) grew up in New York, and after studying art at Hunter College and Columbia University, moved to Mexico City in 1936. She joined the vibrant artist community in the city and became closely connected with artists Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and José Clemente Orozco. Though Nancarrow served as an assistant to Orozco on mural projects, she was a successful painter and jewelry designer in her own right. In 1947, the Galeria de Arte Mexicano, Mexico City, mounted Nancarrow's first solo exhibition, which further launched her career. Like many female artists, Nancarrow's career has long been overshadowed by her male counterparts, and has only recently garnered a resurgence of interest in her artwork. She is the subject of an exhibition at the Taubman Museum of Art, Roanoke, "Annette Nancarrow and Her Collection," from December 5, 2023, to December 8, 2024.
