Vicky Jackson Nangala Art for Sale at Auction

ARTIST BIO: Vicky Nangala
People: Warlpiri
Language: Warlpiri
Area: Yuendumu

Vicky is the granddaughter of the very famous artist Walangkura Napanangka, Uta Uta's widow. She is part of the younger generation of artists that have embraced their heritage by telling their stories through the painted medium. A re-occuring subject matter in her paintings is Travelling Women, my Country, which relates to Dreamtime women who travelled from Kintore to the ceremonial site near Tjukula. Fine coloured lines on the painting depict the tracks, or footprints of the travelling women and the Tali, or dunes they must negotiate on foot.

Today the women still travel long distances to reach their sacred sites for ceremonies, just as their ancestors did. The women are given special laws to live by at the ceremonies, as taught by their Dreamtime ancestors.

The sacred sites are a source of spiritual power and a place to reflect on the earth's creators. Vicky's bold, beautifully executed brush strokes and colour contrasts produce a striking and modern painting.
