FRANK ARTHUR NANKIVELL (1869-1969) THE SUNDAY JOURNAL / NO. 3 OF THE GREAT HUSBANDS AND WIVES SERIES. 1897. 15x20 inches, 38x50 3/4 cm. Orcutt Co., N.Y. Condition A-: minor tears and abrasions in margins; minor creases in margins and image and along vertical and horizontal folds. Paper. Nankivell was born in Australia and came to America slowly via the Pacific route, spending years in Hong Kong and Japan before landing in San Francisco. In California, he began providing illustrations for The Call, a local newspaper. He eventually moved to Chicago where he joined William Randolph Hearst's media empire as part of the staff of the New York Journal. "'The Sunday Journal' was always full of charming girls with large eyes and tricky curls, all with a certain spice of naughtiness, but of the baby order of naughtiness. None of Nankivell's ladies are wicked, nor do they seem to have that knowledge of the world and its way as have the Dudley Hardy or Cheret variety" (The Poster, October 1900, p. 67). The Poster, October 1900, p. 66, Margolin p. 179.
