WN0411272 122 x 61cm PROVENANCE: Papunya Tula Artists, Alice Spring (accompanied by the certificate of authenticity) Scott Livesey Galleries, Melbourne (stamp verso) Private collection, Melbourne EXHIBITIONS: Wintjiya Napaltjarri, Scott Livesey Galleries, Melbourne, 5 - 26 July 2006 OTHER NOTES: "The circles in this painting depict rockholes and soakage water sites at the claypan site of Watanuma, north-west of the Kintore Community. A group of women camped at this site before travelling to the rockhole site of Malparingya and continuing east to Pinari, also north-west of Kintore. They also gathered the seeds known as mungilypa or samphire from the small fleshy sub-shrub Tecticornia verrucosa. WINTJIYA (WINNIE) NAPALJARRI (1932-2014) (Language group: Pintupi) Untitled 2005 acrylic on Belgian linen inscribed verso with artist's name and Papunya Tula Artists cat. no. WN0508174 122 x 61cm PROVENANCE: Papunya Tula Artists, Alice Spring (accompanied by the certificate of authenticity) Scott Livesey Galleries, Melbourne (stamp verso) Private collection, Melbourne OTHER NOTES: "The roundels in this painting depict the claypans at site of Watanuma, north-west of the Kintore Community. A group of women, represented by the 'U' shapes, gathered at the site to perform the dances and sing the songs associated with the area. They also made spun hair-string for making hair-string skirts (nyimparra) which are worn during ceremonies. Upon completion of these ceremonies the women continued their travels to the rockhole site of Malparingya and then continued east to Pinari, also north-west of Kintore. The lines in this work depict the wana (nulla - nullas) that the women carried with them on their journey. As they travelled they gathered large quanities of the edible fruit known as pura, (also known in Pintupi as pintalypa) or bush tomato from the small shrub Solamun chippendalei. This fruit is the size of a small apricot, and after the seeds have been removed, can be stored for long periods by halving the fruit and skewering them onto a stick." As they travelled they gathered large quantities of seeds known as mungilypa or samphire from the small fleshy sub-shrub Tecticornia Verrucosa. These seeds are ground into a paste which is cooked in the coals to form a type of unleavened bread. " - Papunya Tula Artists Wintjiya was born at Malparingya, north-west of the Kintore community. As the second wife of Turkey Tolson's father, she left her community and moved to Haasts Bluff with her husband and then to the Papunya community after it was established. She participated in the Kintore/Haasts Bluff collaborative project which was the beginning of her career and later painted exclusively for Papunya Tula Artists.
