They shared many Dreaming stories, in particular those associated with Mina Mina, a sacred site for the Napanangka and Napangardi skin groups on Warlpiri land. Fluent in both Pintupi and Warlpiri, Mitjili could trace her heritage to members of the Pintupi whose first contact with white people was a meeting with Donald Thompson’s exploration party in 1957. While most Pintupi moved north towards Balgo or east towards Papunya, Mitjili Napanangka Gibson’s small family group moved to the Warlpiri community of Yuendumu. In this painting, Mitjili has depicted a part of a long narrative Dreaming story about two young girls. Their tracks are shown as they walk between sites around the Murruwa area where they sat down. This piece is a fine example of an Australian Aboriginal artwork.

Gibson, Mitjili Napanangka Kunamanarra Synthetic Polymer Paint on Belgian Linen 92 x 92 cm

          Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Mitjili was born at Winparrku (Mt Webb), in Pintupi country not far from Kiwirkurra in Western Australia. She also spoke fluent Warlpiri. After several fleeting encounters with Europeans, Mitjili and her family came into contact with members of the Donald Thomson expedition in 1957 at Lappi Lappi waterhole (Nicker Creek). Throughout the 1960s until the late 1990s while most Pintupi groups who had left the desert had either moved north towards Balgo or east towards Papunya, Mitjili's family group moved independently into Warlpiri country, to the Yuendumu community, and remained there for over a decade. In this painting, Kunamanarra, the artist depicted her country after rain with wildflowers in abundance. Amongst its hills and rock holes, the site represented has a low ridge rock face which contains a native well. This is her mothers’ country. Gallery Gondwana, NSW Cat No. 9770
