WALANGKURA NAPANANGKA (c.1946-2014) (Language group: Pintupi) Untitled 2009 synthetic polymer paint on linen 122 x 91cm PROVENANCE: The Artist Papunya Tula Artists, Northern Territory, cat. no. WN0901021 (accompanied by a copy of the certificate of authenticity) Cross Cultural Art Exchange, Northern Territory The Le Pley Collection, Western Australia, acquired from the above in 2009 OTHER NOTES: "This painting depicts designs associated with Kurriuntu, west of the Tjukula Community. The roundels are camp sites and the adjacent "U' shapes are women who have gathered at the site to perform the dances and sing the songs associated with the area. At this site the women spun hair-string with which to make nyimparra (hair string skirts) which are worn during these ceremonies. The women also gathered the edible berries known as kampurarrpa or desert raisin from the small shrub Solanum centrale. These berries are ground into a paste which is cooked in the coals to form a type of damper. The various shapes in the work represent the rocky outcrops near the site. As they travelled they gathered large quantities of the edible fruit known as pura, (also known in Pintupi as pintalypa) or bush tomato from the small shrub Solanum chippendalei. This fruit is the size of a small apricot, and after the seeds have been removed, can be stored for long periods by halving the fruit and skewering them onto a stick." Walangkura Napanangka has an enviable artistic pedigree. Her father, Tutuma Tjapangati, was one of the original Papunya artists and her mother, Injuwa Nampitjinpa, belonged to the important first wave of women desert artists. Her sister, Pirrmangka Napanangka (now deceased), was a rising star until her untimely early death, and all four artists were included in the groundbreaking exhibition Papunya Tula: Genesis and Genius at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in 2000.

          Oct. 20, 2020

Walangkura Napanangka - Wirrulnga (Two Rockholes), 1999

          Est: $7,000 - $9,000

As one of the last generation to remember a childhood lived in the desert, Walangkura Napanangka travelled by foot over the hundreds of kilometres from her remote desert home before settling at Papunya with her mother Inyuwa, adoptive father Tutuma Tjapangati, and sister Pirrmangka Napanangka all of whom became artists. In 1994 she participated in the historic women’s collaborative painting project that was initiated by the older women, and in time Walangkura became one of Papunya Tula’s most senior women artists. Her first solo exhibition was held at Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi in 2003, and this was followed by another at Utopia Art Sydney in 2004. This painting depicts the designs associated with Wirrulnga, a site with two rockholes on top of a hill, just east of the Kiwirrkurra Community. The small shapes represent the rocks surrounding the site. A large group of ancestral women vistied the site and gather the berries known as Ngamunypurru or Conkleberry from the shrub Carissa lancoeolata. The women later travelled east passing through Pukanya and Umair and then on to Pinari, north of Kintore.

A large group of senior women camped at this rockhole making the nose-bones, also known as Marrapinti, which are worn through a hole in the nose-web. These nose-bones were originally won by both men and women but are now only worn by the older generation on ceremonial occasions. The women later travelled east passing through the Kiwirrkurra area.

          Jun. 23, 2020

Walangkura (Uta Uta Tjangala's Widow) Napanangka - Tjukurla

          Est: $15,000 - $20,000

Walangkura Napanangka (Uta Uta Tjangala's widow) was born beside a rockhole near where the Tjukurla community was later established. As a young woman, she travelled with her large family in the country between Punkilpirri near Docker River and Walukirritji rockhole on the south-western side of Lake MacDonald. When she was in her early teens, her family was met by a welfare patrol – among them Nosepeg Tjupurrula – and were invited to travel with other Pintupi people to the Haasts Bluff settlement. She later moved to Papunya to live with her husband Uta Uta Tjangala, who was one of the original shareholders of Papunya Tula Artists. She is the daughter of Inyuwa Nampitjinpa and the sister of Pirrmangka Napanangka, who both painted for Papunya Tula Artists. This painting depicts the designs associated with the lake site of Tjukurla in Western Australia. The roundels in this work represent the rockholes at this site. The lines depict the surrounding sandhills. According to the creation myth, a group of ancestral women gathered at this site to perform dances and sing. While at Tjukurla, the women spun hairstring to make nyimparra (hair string skirts), which are worn during ceremonies. The women also gathered large quantities of edible fruit known as pura, or bush tomato, from the small shrub Solanum chippendalei. This fruit is the size of a small apricot. After the seeds have been removed, they can be stored for long periods by halving the fruit and skewering them onto a stick. Upon completion of the ceremonies, the women continued their travels north, toward the rockhole site of Illpilli and then on to a site near Nyirrpi.
