        Oct. 20, 2020

Nyanyuma Napangardi - Tingari Dreaming Cycle, 2003

        Est: $600 - $800

Nanyuma Napangati is a Pintupi senior law woman (born c.1944 in Kiwirrkurra, Western Australia) and depicts designs associated with women's ceremonies. In this work the site depicted is part of the Tingari songline. The Tingari Cycle is a secret song cycle sacred to initiated men and women. The Tingari are Dreamtime beings who travelled across the landscape performing ceremonies to create and shape the country. They gathered at these sites for Maliera (initiation) ceremonies. The sites take the form of, and are located at, significant rockholes, sand hills, sacred mountains and water soakages in the Western Desert. Tingari may be poetically interpreted as song-line paintings relating to the songs of the people and creation stories of places in Pintupi mythology. In 1999, Nanyuma was one of the artists involved in the Kiwirrkurra women's painting project, which culminated in the first auction to raise money for the Renal Dialysis Unit at Kintore, an Aboriginal Community in the Western Desert.

        Nanyuma Napangati (Aborigine, born c.1944)

        Est: £400 - £600

Nanyuma Napangati (Aborigine, born c.1944) Nanyuma Napangati (Aborigine, born c.1944) Untitled Acrylic on linen, numbered 1508051 and inscribed with artist's name verso 61 x 91cm, unframed Provenance: Wartenberg, Utopia Art, Sydney and thence inherited by the present owner. The art of the Australian Aborigines is widely recognised as being the oldest art form in the world, preceding that of the Americas and Europe by many centuries. For thousands of years, however, the only art forms practised by the Aborigines were rock painting and carving, bark painting, sand painting and body painting using natural ochres, wild desert cotton, charcoal and birds' down, often carried out as part of ceremonial activities. It was not until 1971 that the Aborigines of the Papunya Tula settlement in the deserts of the Northern Territory were introduced to methods of painting on canvas and board using modern materials.
