          Raffy Napay (b. 1986) - Untitled

          Est: ₱500,000 - ₱650,000

Untitled signed and dated 2021 (lower right and verso) thread, textile, beads and acrylic on canvas 72” x 48” (183 cm x 122 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot WRITE UP Threading the Path to Resilience At its core, Raffy Napay's art embodies his resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Growing up as the middle child of a tricycle driver and a seamstress, art was never just a hobby for him; it was a means of contributing to his family's livelihood. From a young age, Napay immersed himself in painting and entered contests to help support his household. Due to circumstance, Napay was compelled to abandon these mediums after developing a severe allergy. Despite this challenge, he refused to let it halt his creative path. During his recovery, Napay found unexpected inspiration in his mother’s work as a seamstress. This connection led him to explore threads and fabrics as new materials for his art, allowing him to continue his practice in an innovative way. Through this medium, Napay not only weaves intricate details into his canvases but also infuses them with a sense of visual poetry. He approaches the creative process with threads and fabrics in much the same way he did with paint, from the initial concept to the final touches. His unique method allows him to explore depth and complexity in ways that go beyond traditional painting, creating works that are rich in texture and meaning. Napay's art is a testament to his ability to adapt and thrive, transforming personal challenges into a distinctive artistic voice that resonates with both beauty and emotional depth. This shift brought a fresh dimensionality to his art. His ability to adapt and evolve has resulted in a unique approach that sets his work apart, blending texture and depth in ways that resonate with both visual and emotional richness. (Jed Daya)

          Raffy Napay (b. 1986) - Untitled

          Est: ₱300,000 - ₱390,000

Untitled signed and dated 2022 (bottom) thread, textile and acrylic on canvas 48" x 72" (122 cm x 183 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot The story as to how Raffy Napay developed his unique artistic practice can be described as the string of fate working its will. Initially working with oil and acrylic paints, Napay was forced to abandon these materials due to an adverse allergy he developed. However, this setback did not deter his artistic journey. During his recovery, Napay found inspiration in his mother, who worked as a seamstress at the time. Drawing from her craft, Napay transitioned to working with threads and fabrics as a way to continue his artistic practice. Since then, he has produced pioneering pieces that utilized the meticulous physicality of fabrics, while maintaining a painterly quality in his work. This unique approach added a novel level of dimensionality to his art, one that would have been absent had he stuck to traditional paints and oils. This particular 2022 piece by Napay is notable not only for its intricacy, but also for its choice of color (or sparseness thereof) Napay works, whether big or small, usually exhibit an array of colored threads, expertly chosen by the artist to contribute to the mood of the work as a whole. Here, we see Napay’s choice to utilize shades of white and grey in order to create a feeling of temperance and transcendence. (Jed Daya)

As the middle child of a tricycle driver and a seamstress, art was not a mere hobby for the young Raffy Napay. He grew up painting and participating in contests as a way to support his family. After some time, he experienced respiratory problems with oil and acrylic paints, his original chosen medium, which led him to explore a new material - thread. Through this medium, Napay weaved his canvases not only with intricate details but also with visual poetry. He is able to see the creative process behind the threads and fabrics, which he found to be closely comparable to the use of paint - from early ideation to the finishing touches on an artwork. He created his thread oeuvres as he would a painting, but exploring depth and complexity rather than simply miming light. In 2017, his works were exhibited at the Palazzo Mora during the 57th Venice Biennale in collaboration with the European Cultural Centre. Then in 2018, he received the Thirteen Artists Award from the Cultural Center of the Philippines. (P.I.R.)

Looking with closer scrutiny, the viewer discovers that a myriad of threads, forming sinuous stitches, knots, and tassels upon an undergrowth of exotic flora and fauna are sewn together featuring a depiction of flowers in a field, candidly huddled together emanating its radiant red and scarlet colors with its green stalks standing tall serving as its edifices - Napay indeed, was able to paint over the textile, machine sews semblances of tree trunks, branches and twigs, then hand embroiders other elements to summon a grove or copse view - introducing his viewers to his experience of humanity and environment where he was able to build his particular synthetic view on the complementarity of familial and natural habitations, and the interconnectedness of persons towards their quest for growth and wholeness.

          Est: ₱500,000 - ₱650,000

Raffy Napay (b. 1986) Trees signed and dated 2017 (lower center and verso) fabric, cotton, thread, and wool 60" x 48" (152 cm x 122 cm) PROPERTY FROM THE MANUEL AND ALICE QUE COLLECTION Acquired directly from the artist This particular piece titled Trees perfectly captures both Napay’s technical skill and conceptual rigor. Napay’s practice often revolves around connections. He manages to communicate this not only through his chosen subject matter but also through the very medium his works exist in which implies an inherent form of interconnectedness. Through this method, Napay has explored a number of forms of interconnectedness, from familial bonds to ties between man and country. But Trees explore a form of connection that is not necessarily human but concerns us nonetheless. The work seemingly implies the interconnectedness of nature, suggesting that the natural world is not something out there for us, but something that we share and engage with every day. Thus, the thread of nature is one that is inherently connected to us, and one that we must appreciate and preserve.

The required skill is very technical, that’s one way of looking at it or one could see that his creations are the extension of the canvas wherein his artworks tell stories of his journey from his childhood to where he is now and show that he never forgets his humble beginning. He makes it a point that his life story be the soul of what he does best. Unlike other paintings that are complex which are open to a beholder’s own interpretation, Napay’s artworks are straightforward, well- meaning and spot on. His artworks are visual poetry.

A seemingly unfinished sketch of an airplane is surrounded by a sea of dreamlike clouds amidst a red, blue, and gold sky. Perched on top of the plane’s right wing is a person gazing longingly into the vast expanse of Napay’s firmament. Napay’s subtle yet kaleidoscopic color palette and endearing elements effectively communicate an empathetic sense of wonder and yearning—a common thread found throughout most of Napay’s oeuvres. It is through this inherent interest in the expanse of both the wonders of the physical world and the curiosities of the human heart that Napay is able to create magnificent tapestries that speak to a multitude of viewers on a deeply personal level.

          Raffy T. Napay (b. 1986) - Bukid

          Est: ₱3,000,000 - ₱3,900,000

Raffy T. Napay (b. 1986) Bukid signed and dated 2017 (verso) thread on canvas The strikingly original works of art by contemporary visual artist Raffy Napay are born out of both personal and artistic necessity. Napay graduated from Eulogio Amang Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology with a degree in Fine Arts. He then managed to win a number of major awards such as the Metrobank Art & Design Excellence Award in 2008 and the Philip Morris Philippine Art Award in 2012 and 2014. Napay originally worked with oil and acrylic paints but developed an adverse allergy to the materials, forcing him to abandon the medium. While recovering, he drew inspiration from his mother, who was a seamstress at the time. Napay, as a way of continuing his artistic practice without sacrificing his overall health and safety, began working with threads and fabrics. Eventually, Napay would create pioneering pieces that utilized the meticulous physicality of fabrics to create jaw-dropping and epic pieces that maintained their painterly quality. One can see Napay’s works as a triumph over adversity. Napay’s works often revolve around idyllic and rural scenes. But, rather than falling into tradition, Napay’s unique medium allows him to create novel reinterpretations of classical scenes. Each part of his piece is coherent and directed, imbuing his work with intention and dimension. But, Napay’s works are accessible and creative enough for one to weave one’s own meaning upon viewing. His works interweave his personal histories with the shared experiences of a relatively fledgling nation finding its footing in a globalized world. Napay’s groundbreaking artistic practice landed him two international residency grants, one Liverpool Hope University in the United Kingdom, and another one in Artesan Gallery + Studio in Singapore. He has mounted several international exhibitions, such as his solo show at Art Stage Singapore and a solo exhibition entitled Sanctuary at Ateneo Art Gallery in 2015. Napay also managed to bag the coveted Il Lorenzo Magnifico at the 10th Florence Biennale in 2016. Estimate in USD $60000-$78000

        • Raffy Napay (b.1986) I Live here (Diptych)
          Dec. 01, 2018

Raffy Napay (b.1986) I Live here (Diptych)

          Est: ₱500,000 - ₱650,000

Raffy Napay (b.1986) I Live here (Diptych) 2014 mixed media 96” x 72 1/2” (243 cm x 184 cm) Such are the words to describe Raffy Napay’s thread designs, of a hollow block wall. A soft and mellow subtlety replaces the expected hardness of the “wall” surface image. Raffy Napay received the coveted International “Lorenzo il Magnifico” Award for Textile Art from Florence Biennale in 2015. For him to reach this apex, Napay has reached degrees of intricacy and refinement unequalled by any in the weaving arts. During his collegiate days as a Fine Arts: Advertising student in Eulogio Amang Rodriguez Institute of Science and Technology (EARIST), Napay’s preferred medium was paint — until he decided to use thread. The use of thread and textiles in his work was introduced by his mother who is a seamstress. Thus for Napay these days, each unique works is its own definition of his art cum crafts its own recognition that thread totally differs from paint as in oil paint. In this diptych bold geometric areas are defined as dictated by the loom and by the materials. The tell-tale presence of a vine or plant softens the “hard” hollow block surface. Eventually, Napay learned to sew by hand and a machine. He used both methods to come up with intrciate, simple, and captivating artworks vis-à-vis “scale-played” subjects and details of each. In 2013, Napay’s “Thread Experience” won an award in an art contest. The work honors his seamstress mother. According to The Philippine Daily Inquirer, he took time to show “sources of emotion, memory, nostalgia and creativity”. Winning the award led him to Liverpool Hope University in the United Kingdom in 2014. As a resident, he explored the art scene as he made use of “spaces of homeliness”. He saw these things as sanctuaries for mutualism in terms of growth and human connections. He capped off his Liverpool residency with an exhibit entitled “Hope Springs." Napay also received another residency grant by Artesan Gallery in Singapore
