CAPE COD - THE NEW HAVEN RAILROAD ORIGINAL VINTAGE POSTER BY BEN NASON

      Est: $2,500 - $3,500

This is one of several travel posters commissioned by the New Haven Railroad and first issued just before the beginning of World War II. "The New Haven was an extremely passenger oriented railroad and a great proportion of its revenues came from New England vacation travel. An important element of the New Haven's postwar vacation travel marketing campaign was a series of seven travel posters, each about 27 by 42 inches in size, which promoted popular vacation destinations directly served by New Haven Railroad passenger trains. Designed with a somewhat stylized family resemblance by an artist named Ben Nason (born 1915 - ?) and executed in bright colors using an airbrush technique, these travel posters were printed (perhaps at first) starting about 1941. "Distribution was curtailed during the Second World War, when all non-essential travel was actively discouraged by the railroad. However, the Nason posters were widely distributed to stations, ticket offices, travel agencies, and other interested parties (such as stores) starting in late 1945. [They] remained in service (although perhaps in limited numbers towards the end) up through at least the middle of 1955." (web site of the New Haven Railroad Historical and Technical Association) Other posters in the series touted the charms of the Berkshires,Nantucket, Boston, Connecticut, Martha's Vineyard, and Rhode Island. All employed colorful and highly stylized images of the natural and architectural attractions of the areas depicted. Unfortunately, little is known of Ben Nason who clearly had a strong talent for poster art. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

BEN NASON (1915-?) MARTHA'S VINEYARD / THE NEW HAVEN RAILROAD. Circa 1945. 42 1/2x28 inches, 108x71 cm. Condition B: restored losses and repaired pin holes in corners; repaired tears, restored losses and restoration in margins; creases and abrasions in margins and image. At the end of World War II, the New Haven Railroad launched a campaign to attract vacationers to New England. Here the simple images of brightly-colored, gingerbread-style houses and small waterfront fishing shacks do much to promote the island as an ideal family vacation spot. The railroad actually delivered passengers to Woods Hole, where a ferry transported the travelers to the island itself. The enormous figurehead that bisects the image is a romanticized reminder of the whaling ships that populated the island's history.

The New Haven Railroad presented a bucolic countryside scene in an attempt to lure passengers. BEN NASON New Haven Railroad/Cape Cod. Nason combines day and night to create an atmospheric poster for Cape Cod, the arm-shaped peninsula and easternmost portion of Massachusetts, which was originally connected to the mainland, yet effectively transformed into a large island with the opening of the Cape Cod Canal in 1914. Due to its constantly moving and dangerous shoals, Cape Cod historically has been the host of numerous beacons that warned ships of the danger. Instead of singling-out a specific lighthouse, the artist monolithically installs a single exemplar at poster's center and cleverly calls upon its powerful illuminating beam to create a perfect day for sailing.

BEN NASON New Haven Railroad/Nantucket. Located thirty miles south of Cape Cod, the island of Nantucket, much like Martha's Vineyard, is a tourist destination and summer colony that once thrived as a whaling port. However, due to a decline on domestic dependence on whale oil and the depopulation of the island following the 'Great Fire' of 1846, Nantucket was left underdeveloped and isolated until the mid-Twentieth Century. And though unquestionably unfortunate, this isolation kept many of the pre-Civil War buildings intact and by the 1950s, enterprising developers began restoring these structures to create an upmarket destination in the Northeastern United States. And it's this ironic twist of fate that Nason focuses on in this New Haven Railroad poster historical architectural preservation brought about by seizing on adversity past.

BEN NASON New Haven Railroad/Martha's Vineyard. Though the New Haven Railroad couldn't get any of its passengers directly to the roughly triangular island of Martha's Vineyard seeing as it's located three miles off the coast of Cape Cod, it could surely get you a Massachusetts town with a ferry in order to complete the journey. Known primarily as a summer tourist colony in contemporary times, Nasan divides The Vineyard neatly with a carved figurehead, bisecting it into two clearly defined areas one featuring the Gay Head Light and a nod to its commercial maritime history and another tiled with the Gingerbread Cottages of Oak Bluffs.

BEN NASON New Haven Railroad/Connecticut. The Connecticut River cuts through the center of its namesake state, flowing into Long Island Sound, Connecticut's outlet to the Atlantic Ocean. With this geographic tidbit firmly in place, Nason simply condenses the matter-of-fact, rendering the Connecticut as it meanders from covered bridge to idyllic pastoral calm to the non-bustle of a 'green' around which a quaint riverside village is centered. Certainly, the New Haven services the state, yet Nason would seem to be saying that once a traveler has used the railroad's service to arrive there, it's best to roam the river to discover whatever is closest to one's heart. And seeing as Connecticut is ranked forty-eighth in state size, a couple free days make this an entirely plausible undertaking.

Berkshire County, the westernmost county in Massachusetts, is conveniently located within a two-and-one-half hour drive from New York City or Boston. Surrounded by the Berkshire Hills to the east and the Taconic Mountains to the west, the splendid area that also offers numerous lakes, rivers and streams has become a summer and leaf-peeping haven for the affluent and those who merely would like to be perceived in that light. Nason's spectacular and mildly abstract vision of verdant simplicity for the New Haven Railroad tempts the nearby city dwellers with expansive freshness with room to roam.

BEN NASON New Haven Railroad/Boston. The New Haven Railroad was an extremely passenger-oriented line and a great proportion of its revenues came from New England vacation travel. Posters in no small part contributed to an awareness of the railway and Ben Nason contributed greatly to this lithographic consciousness with a series of approximately seven designs first appearing circa 1941. In 1945, after the conclusion of WW II, the posters were once again widely distributed and continued to run as late as 1955. Boston was the northern end point of the New Haven Railroad's 'Shoreline Route'. The Nason poster depicts four famously familiar structures that to this day remain popular tourist attractions for visitors: The Massachusetts State House, the Bunker Hill Monument, the Old State House, and the Old North Church.

BEN NASON CAPE COD. Circa 1945. 42 x 28 inches. Condition B+: repaired tears in margins. A night and day image of a small New England village on the Massachusetts shore. In the style of some of the great European graphic designers, Nason cleverly employs the light house lamp in a dual role--both to light up the night sky and as the sun on the daytime side of the image. One in a series of seven posters issued by the New Haven Railroad after the Second World War promoting New England vacation travel. "During World War Two, heavy military traffic demands forced the New Haven to actively discourage civilians from riding its trains for non-essential purposes. Once the war ended, however, the New Haven railroad set out to recapture the New England vacation travel business with large scale purchases of new passenger equipment and an unprecedented mass marketing campaign" (www.nhrta.org/htdocs/images1199.htm). BEN NASON MARTHA'S VINEYARD. Circa 1945.

      Est: $1,200 - $1,800

42x28 inches. Condition B-: restoration and overpainting in margins and corners; paper loss in image; faded. At the end of World War II, the New Haven Railroad launched a campaign to attract vacationers to New England. The simple images of brightly-colored gingerbread-style houses and small waterfront fishing shacks do much to promote the island as an ideal family vacation spot. The railroad actually delivered passengers to Woods Hole, where a ferry transported the travellers to the island itself. The enormous figurehead that bisects the image is a romanticized reminder of the whaling ships that populated the island's history.

[ Movie Posters ] New Haven Railroad (Circa 1950) Travel Poster (28" X 42"). The New Haven was an extremely passenger oriented railroad and a great proportion of its revenues came from New England vacation travel. An important element of the New Haven's postwar vacation travel marketing campaign was a series of seven travel posters, which promoted popular vacation destinations directly served by New Haven Railroad passenger trains. Designed with a somewhat stylized family resemblance by an artist named Ben Nason and executed in bright colors using an airbrush technique, these travel posters were printed starting about 1941. Distribution was curtailed during the Second World War, when all non-essential travel was actively discouraged by the railroad. However, the Nason posters were widely distributed to stations, ticket offices, travel agencies, and other interested parties starting in late 1945. The Nason posters remained in service ( although perhaps in limited numbers towards the end) up through at least the middle of 1955. The New Haven Railroad was a dominating presence throughout the state of Connecticut. Nason's Connecticut poster depicted the stylized path of a river coursing from the ocean into the New England countryside. Very Fine condition on Linen.
