NAUMAN BRUCE (n. 1941). THIGING (F-2, COPY F), 1967. on the case: Castelli/ Sonnabend label, Tapes & films, New York PROVENANCE Private collection, Massa Bruce Nauman is an American photographer, sculptor, video artist and conceptual artist. Over the course of his career, the artist uses different media and, having abandoned painting, he turns to sculpture and drawing, performance, video and installation. Starting in 1965, Nauman made films and videos in his studio that reproduced his and his physical actions movements, aimed at demonstrating that art is whatever the artist does or creates in his studio, exactly according to the Duchampian principle of the pre-eminence given to the planning moment compared to the executive one. These films document his activities without narrative concerns or aesthetics; the artist is the protagonist of the filmed actions but there are no autobiographical intentions, indeed if filmed, the his face is cut off or is unrecognizable. Instead, parts of his or other performers' bodies are framed in the foreground and are observed as abstract details. Nauman's actions are repeated several times so as to provoke feelings of anguish and restlessness in the viewer. Therefore, the body is the fulcrum of Nauman's performance art research. The work presented here, Thighing from 1967, is a 4.36 minute color sound short. The The video's title is a play on words between "thigh" and "sigh". Nauman in this film shows a close-up of his thigh, with his hand pinching, pushing and manipulating the skin and flesh in various ways, while in you can hear his breathing in the background.. 19,00 x 19,00 cm.
