François Joseph Navez, Rettung naht dramatische Szene mit schiffbrüchiger Familie mit Kleinkind und Matrosen auf einem Floß aus Schiffsresten, während ein junger Mann einer verzweifelten Mutter mit Säugling beisteht, weist ein älterer Seemann auf ein nahendes Segelschiff am Horizont, anrührende, fein lasierende, partiell gering pastose Genremalerei mit schönem Licht, Inspiration zu vorliegenden Gemälde erhielt Navez wohl durch das 1819 von Théodore Géricault in Rom geschaffene großformatige Gemälde "Das Floß der Medusa [Le Radeau de la Méduse]" – welches 1819 eine Sensation im Pariser Salon und gleichwohl eine Provokation darstellte, da dem Gemälde eine historische Begebenheit zugrunde lag und es ein für Frankreich wenig rühmliches Ereignis des Jahres 1816 berührte, in diesem Jahr wollte Frankreich seine westafrikanische Kolonie Senegal wieder in Besitz nehmen und schickte vier Schiffe – unter anderem die vom hoch dekorierten, jedoch unerfahrenen Kapitän Hugues Duroy de Chaumareys (1763–1841) befehligte "Méduse", nach Navigationsfehlern lief das mit ca. 400 Personen besetzte Schiff auf eine Sandbank, mangels ausreichenden Rettungsbooten befahl der Kapitän, aus Schiffsteilen ein Floß zu bauen, um 149 Menschen aufzunehmen und von den Rettungsbooten an Land gezogen zu werden, das Unternehmen misslang – die Rettungsboote kappten die Verbindung zum Floß und das mit zu wenig Proviant steuerlos auf dem Meer treibende Floß wurde zum Inbegriff menschlicher Tragödie – von den 149 Menschen überlebten letztendlich 10, wie nah Navez der Begebenheit ist, zeigt eine Vorstudie Géricaults, die dieser nach Berichten zur Tragödie anfertigte, jedoch in seinem Hauptwerk nicht verwandte – sie zeigt eine entkräftete junge Familie mit Kleinkind, Navez hat diese Szene in sein hier vorliegendes Gemälde integriert, dies ist nicht weiter verwunderlich, da Géricault und Navez zur gleichen Zeit in Rom weilten und im Künstlerkreis der Villa Medici verkehrten, Öl auf Holzplatte, 1. Hälfte 19. Jh., rechts unten undeutlich signiert "F. J. Navez", rückseitig diverse Annotationen und Etiketten, unter anderem Etikett "Sopheby´s Lo No. 198" (das Gemälde ist am 8.11.1994 unter Lot Nr. 198 auf der Aktion von Sotheby´s Amsterdam nachweisbar), geringe Craquelure, Malplatte etwas gebaucht, alt retuschiert, etwas restaurierungsbedürftig, im alten Goldstuckrahmen (restaurierungsbedürftig, Einzelteile der Stuckierung beigegeben) in Zweitnutzung gerahmt, Falzmaße ca. 52,5 x 42 cm. Künstlerinfo: auch Francois Josef Navez, belgischer Portrait-, Genre- und Historienmaler, Kirchenmaler, Glasfenstergestalter sowie Pädagoge (1787 Charleroi/Grafschaft Hennegau bis 1869 Brüssel-Auderghem), studierte 1803–08 an der Académie royale des Beaux-Arts Brüssel und erhielt laut Nagler (1841) "... alle Preise derselben.", 1808–11 Atelierschüler voni Pierre Joseph Célestin François, 1810 Gründungsmitglied der Brüsseler Gesellschaft der Kunstliebhaber, 1812 erster Preis in Historienmalerei in Gent, daraufhin 1813–16 mit Stipendium Weiterbildung bei Jacques-Louis David (1748–1825) in Paris, parallel Studium der Altmeister wie Anthonis van Dyck und Peter Paul Rubens im Louvre, 1816 Rückkehr mit dem aus Paris emigrierenden Jacques-Louis David nach Brüssel, 1816 Aufenthalt in Berlin, 1816–17 unter David in Brüssel tätig, wo er zum Begründer der neoklassizistischen belgischen Malerschule wurde, 1817–22 mit Stipendium der Brüsseler Society des Beaux-Arts in Rom, hier beeinflusst durch die Malerei Caravaggios und Kontakt zu Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres und Verkehr im Künstlerkreis ehemaliger Schüler Davids in der Villa Medici, ab 1822 in Brüssel freischaffend und 1830–59 Betrieb einer Freien Malschule, ab 1824 Mitglied der Königlich Niederländischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1825 Ehrung als Ritter mit dem Orden vom Niederländischen Löwen, 1837 Ritter, 1855 Offizier und schließlich 1859 Kommandeur des belgischen Leopoldsordens, 1835 Gründungsmitglied und Vizepräsident der Königlichen Kommissi

Signed and dated lower right: F. J. Navez 1853 The whereabouts of the present painting were previously unknown. Denis Coekelbergs published it with a black and white photo in the catalogue "François-Joseph Navez - La Nostalgie de l'Italie" and described it as "Repos de la pèlerine - campagne de Rome". The painting was owned by a Flemish aristocratic family for generations and is in its old, original condition. The depiction of mother and son in a barren landscape is reminiscent of the biblical subjects that Navez painted in Rome, in particular his 1820 painting "Hagar and Ishmael" (Brussels, Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts). However, the influence of David and the Nazarenes is less noticeable in this late work from 1853. Francois-Josph Navez studied at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels from 1803 and won first prize for history painting in 1812. This enabled him to study in the studio of Jacques-Louis David in Paris from June 1813 to 1816. He then spent four years in Italy. In 1821 he settled in Brussels and in 1835 became director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts until 1862. In addition to portraits, Navez also painted mythological and historical scenes. His impressive painting "The Spinners of Fondi" was purchased by King Ludwig I of Bavaria in 1851. It is now part of the collection of the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.

Originally, this portrait was paired with the painting by François-Joseph Navet in the Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels. Measurements: 73 x 62 cm; 103 x 91 cm (frame). François-Joseph Navez was a portraitist and neoclassical genre painter, pupil of J-L David (1748-1825) between 1813 and 1816, whom he hosted in Brussels during his exile. From 1803 to 1808 he was a student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he studied with Pierre Joseph Célestin François. In 1810, along with Antoine Brice and Antoine Cardon, among others, he helped create the "Société des amateurs d'arts". He was professor and director of the Brussels Academy. In 1814 he traveled to Rome, where he met Ingres. Upon his return to Belgium, he set up a studio. He was one of the founding members of the Royal Commission of Monuments, created in 1835. That same year he was appointed Director of the Royal Academy. Today his works are kept in the Louvre Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Belgium, Brussels, the Museum of Grenoble, the Groeningemuseum in Bruges, the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal and the Church of Saint Anthony in Charleroi.

Navez est le véritable fondateur de l’Ecole classique belge moderne et devient à son retour de Rome le directeur de l’Académie Royale des Beaux Arts. Ses portraits sont d’une profonde humanité, et à travers leur facture encore classique, ils laissent présager la proche génération romantique. Another woman is holding the mother's head and turns it towards her child. Navez (Brussels 1787-1869) was a Neoclassical painter and student of Jacques-Louis David. He was director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels (1835-1862). Navez was known for his portraits, history paintings and works of mythological themes. Jan Frans Portaels and Constantin Meunier were his pupils. - Joined: 1-3. Three large size engravings by Achille Martinet, Jos[eph] Bal and Henri Campotosto pencil signed by the artists and dedicated to Navez, 1 stamped "J.
