        Heading: Author: Nègre, Charles Title: [Madonna and Child] - paper negative Place Published: Paris Publisher: Date Published: [1850s] Description: Paper negative of Madonna and Child. 43.5x35 cm (17¼x13¾"). Charles Nègre (1820-1880) was a pioneering photographer. He studied under the painters Paul Delaroche, Ingres, and Drolling before establishing his own studio. Nègre began to photograph in 1844 in order to collect visual images to use in preparation for his paintings. Unlike many painters who turned to the new medium, Nègre never ceased to paint. He is best known for his landscape and architectural photographs of Paris, Chartres, and the Midi, a region in southern France. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Nègre printed all of his own photographs and was renowned as a photographic printer. He retired in 1863 and died at Cannes, France. Provenance: from the celebrated Jammes collection.

        NÈGRE, CHARLES (1820-1881) [Flore, 1859]. Albumen print, 13 x 9 3/4 inches (330 x 247 mm), unmounted. This statue in this image is by Charles-Antoine Coysevox (1640-1720). In 1858, Nègre proposed a publication devoted to a pictorial history of art, which was to be illustrated with his newly developed heliogravure process. This suggestion (to the Emperor) was rejected, but he was instead commissioned to produce a series of prints of the statues in the Tuileries, of which Flore is one. Nègre began photographing there a year later. According to Francoise Heilbrun of the Musée d'Orsay, 15 prints of this image remained in the Nègre family, and a majority were acquired by the Jammes collection, which sold them at their 2002 Paris auction. However, this print was not in this sale, having come directly from the Nègre family. Provenance: Nègre family; Alain Paviot; Vintage Works Ltd.; Dinesh Parekh; to the present owner. C

        Portrait of Lord Henry Brougham (1778 - 1868). Feb. - March 1862. Albumen print. 18 x 14,5 cm. Signed by the photographer in ink lower right corner. Mounted to board (slightly soiled), annotated in pencil on mount verso. Lord Brougham was an important English public figure in the early 19th century and played a decisive role in the marital conflict between King George IV and Caroline von Braunschweig. Later he gained much merit in his role in the abolition of slavery. – Slightly faded, minimal oxidation mirroring in lower portion, otherwise in good condition.
