Michael Neher, "Schlosspark", signed pencil drawing from 1827 Michael Neher, 1798 - Munich - 1876, Biedermeier painter, "Schlosspark", pencil drawing/paper, 26.5 x 44 cm, centrefold, paper browned here, as well as slightly browned on the left and right margin, slight creases, signed, dated 1827, framed under passepartout.p. and framed under glass. After his training, Neher travelled to Italy (Trento, Milan, Trieste, Rome) in 1819. He spent the last two years in Rome, where he specialised in architectural painting in the studio of the painter Heinrich Maria von Hess. He returned to Munich in 1825, set up as a freelance artist and became a member and curator of the Kunstverein München. As a typical representative of the Biedermeier period, Neher created many costume pieces and landscapes. He also made a name for himself with his views of public squares and architectural depictions of many Bavarian cities.

Michael Neher, The Marketplace, Town Hall and St. Peter's Church in Leuven

      Est: €80,000 - €90,000

Signed and dated lower left: Michael Neher 1854 In 1854/1855, Michael Neher travelled along the Rhine river and to Flanders, where he painted some of his most significant works. According to Günther Meier, the present view of Leuven was also painted around this time. It is remarkable for its large format and its complex perspective, which brings together both the imposing late Gothic town hall and the church of St Peter on the other side of the ‘Grote Markt’ in a harmonious composition. The work also features an impressive array of figures: We can see sentries observing two women walking past on the left, and beside them a priest is shown talking to a little girl, whilst the marketplace in the background is alive with merchants, adults and children walking about. In the front right we also see an amusing scene of a house move or estate sale. Three years later, Neher painted a slightly amended version of this composition that appeared at auction in Antwerp in June of this year. In the work, the artist has moved slightly further back with his easel and included some slightly different figures. The work will be included in the forthcoming Michael Neher catalogue raisonné currently being prepared by Günter Meier.

      Oct. 26, 2024

Michael Neher, City Wall in Kehlheim an der Donau

      Est: €20,000 - €30,000

Signed and dated lower right: Mich. Neher 1844 Kehlheim in Lower Bavaria is located at the mouth of the Danube gorge, below the Michaelberg and where the Altmühl flows into the Danube. It was a favourite excursion destination for the people of Munich in the 19th century. Interest in the area increased with the construction of the so-called Liberation Hall on Michelsberg, which was built between 1842 and 1863 on behalf of King Ludwig of Bavaria according to plans by Friedrich Gärtner and Leo von Klenze. It is certainly no coincidence that Neher painted this view of Kehlheim in the first years of the construction of this commemorative monument to the battles against Napoleon, as the town was a widespread topic of discussion at the time

Monogrammed and dated lower left: MN 1832 The artist's first iteration of this motif was purchased by King Frederick William III of Prussia in 1830 at an exhibition of the Munich Art Association. The painting hung in Potsdam Palace as of 1831 but was destroyed in WWII (see “Zerstört – Entführt – Verschollen. Die Verluste der preußischen Schlösser im Zweiten Weltkrieg”, ed. by Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten Berlin Brandenburg, p. 338, no. GK I 4346). This “Street in Tivoli”, painted two years later, was also exhibited by the Munich Art Association and acquired by the Hanover Art Association for a raffle in 1833 (Boetticher op. Cit.) The winner remained anonymous and the painting was lost without trace for many years until it was rediscovered at an auction in Munich in 1998. The work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné currently being prepared by Günter Meier.

Michael Neher Donauwörth - Historic city wall with a view of the Holy Cross Church

      Est: €22,000 - €28,000

Michael Neher 1798 München - 1876 ebenda Donauwörth - Historic city wall with a view of the Holy Cross Church Signed lower left and dated 1851. Stamped number "4" in brown verso. Remnants of an adhesive label with inscription "Herrn Gustav Meins / Böhmersweg N[...]" on the frame verso. Oil auf artists board. 30.7 x 24.4 cm. Restored. Framed (53.5 x 47.5 cm). • Michael Neher The Maderbräuschlößchen near Berg am Laim
      Sep. 25, 2024

Michael Neher The Maderbräuschlößchen near Berg am Laim

      Est: €12,000 - €15,000

Michael Neher 1798 München - 1876 ebenda The Maderbräuschlößchen near Berg am Laim Signed and dated 1851 lower right. Numbered "No 775" on the copperplate verso. Oil auf copper. 111 x 140.5 cm. Restored. Minor damage. Framed (127 x 157.5 cm). additional: wooden back protection. Provenance: Mader/Lochner brewery family, Munich. - Auction Hugo Helbing, Munich, 14 February 1924, catalogue number 478 "Villa bei München" (without illustration): there with different dimensions (width before height) 135 x 103 cm. - Auction Neumeister, Munich, 16 March 1983, catalogue number 1150 "Herrenhaus im Alpenvorland" (with colourplate 145). - Private owner, South Germany. • Michael Neher The Nassauer Haus in Nuremberg
      Sep. 21, 2023

Michael Neher The Nassauer Haus in Nuremberg

      Est: €42,000 - €48,000

Michael Neher 1798 München - 1876 ebenda The Nassauer Haus in Nuremberg Signed lower left. Old label with the number 3475 and another label indistinctly inscribed and numbered 24 on the stretcher verso. Oil auf canvas. 40 x 52 cm. Restored. Framed (56.7 x 68.9 cm). Geschlechterturm in Nürnberg. Michael Neher, A Fish Market in Rome

      Est: €30,000 - €35,000

Ref19C121121 Monogrammed and dated lower right: MN (conjoined) 1829 Certificate Günther Meier, Oberding 29.9.2021. The painting depicting the fish market in Rome was created by Michael Neher in 1829. It has been kept in a German private collection for three generations and has been unknown to the public and to art historical research; it can thus be described as a great new discovery. The fish market in Rome together with Octavian's arches was depicted by Michael Neher twice in 1829. The other version, 56.6 x 48.7 cm, was exhibited at the Munich Kunstverein in 1829 and acquired by Elector Wilhelm II of Hesse-Kassel. It is until today in the possession of the Hessische Hausstiftung and displayed at the Museum Schloss Fasanerie. The composition and the depiction of the architecture of both versions are almost identical, with only minor differences in the figural staffage. The painting is both an architectural veduta and a genre painting. The background of the multi-figured folk scene is the "Portico di Ottavia" on the left bank of the River Tiber near the Marcellus Theatre in Rome, an ancient building where a fish market was held since ancient times. Accordingly, the name of the church, built in 770 between the ruins of the portico that form the small atrium depicted, is "S. Angelo in Pescheria". Michael Neher based the design of the painting on a drawing he had made a few years earlier in Rome around 1825. We thank Günther Meier (Archiv über Michael Neher, Oberding) for his support in cataloguing this painting. The work will be included in his catalogue raisonné on Michael Neher which is currently being prepared.
