For the conclusion of the Year of Dürer 2012, the tradition-steeped porcelain manufactory of Ludwigsburg presented a unique artwork of porcelain after the famous woodcut of Albrecht Dürer from the 16th century. It is a rhinoceros, originally modelled by Gertrud Nein, sculptress and master craftswoman for ceramics, and was commissioned by Her Serene Highness Angela Princess Fugger von Glött. The work by Gertrud Nein was a bronze after the Dürer-Rhinoceros. With great handicraft skills, the modelers of the porcelain manufactory Ludwigsburg created a masterly likeness of the bronze original in a limited 'white gold' edition. Besides this discreet execution in white, there exists an edition in white with gold ornamentation and an edition in the typical black glaze of the manufactory. The rhinoceros is designed very rich in detail with the structure of the skin being near-natural and close to the template by Albrecht Dürer, who made the woodcut in 1515 after a description and a sketch. Despite the wealth of detail, the overall impression appears to be rather calm. This is supported by the white glazing and allows a variety of possibilities for decorating. The figure is marked on the underside of the belly with the green manufacturer's mark of the Schlossmanufaktur Ludwigsburg as well as with the monogram of the modeler on the underside of one hind foot. It is in a perfectly mint condition and only 1.5 years old. The overall dimensions are 24 x 42 cm. Schlossmanufaktur Ludwigsburg In 1758 Duke Carl Eugen of Wurttemberg established a 'porcelain-fabrique' in Ludwigsburg. The porcelain of the manufactory is of a very high quality and is handmade. To this date, the manufactory with its approx. 20 members of staff is regarded as one of the most significant of its kind.
