Inspired by "Ostraka," small pieces of broken pottery used as writing surfaces by the ancient Greeks, Manuel Neri's "Ostrakon" marble series presents graceful fragments, whispers of figures just beginning to emerge from the stone. In his upcoming publication, Manuel Neri: The Tenants of Time, scholar Bruce Nixon addresses the series, stating, "The marble Ostrakons are two or three feet in height, a scale that allows Neri to articulate his underlying formal ideas in an usually exact, controlled manner: in Ostrakon Marble XI (1999), the standing figure is placed against and integrated into a flat wall behind it, giving delicate felicity to the motif of his great Arcos de Geso relief series in plaster created during the prior decade." Born in Manuel Neri's studio in Carrara, Italy in the summer of 1999, the series totaled eighteen works, each titled Ostrakon Marble Maquette, and numbered in Roman numerals. Only four of the maquettes are related thematically to Neri's relief sculptures with the figure emerging from a rectangular background: Ostrakon Marble Maquette  III, Ostrakon Marble Maquette V, Ostrakon Marble Maquette VIII, and the present work, Ostrakon Marble Maquette IX.  HID01801242017

Heading: Author: Neri, Manuel Title: [Nude] Place Published: Benicia, CA Publisher: Date Published: 1993 Description: Mixed media on paper. 103x66 cm (40½x26"); framed: 112x73 cm (44x28¾"). "Manuel Neri [1930-2021] is widely celebrated for his association with what has come to be known as the Bay Area figurative school. His commitment to the human subject is seen as part of a larger tendency that originated among artists in and around San Francisco in the 1950's and 1960's. But his connections with this loosely defined movement are complicated and, at times, contradictory. Neri's involvement with the figure was never absolute; he has moved freely between abstraction and figuration through most of his career, even electing at times to concentrate on the creation of gestural abstract paintings or geometric abstract sculptures – though never to the exclusion of the figure." - John Beardsley, The Hand's Obligation, in Manuel Neri: Early Work 1953-1978. Provenance: from the collection of Marjorie L. Williford, a friend of the artist.Additional shipping charges may apply
