(est. 1841), London, England, circa 1870 In five parts, comprised of the base, center cabinet, two flanking cabinets, and cornice; accompanied by fourteen removable shelves; with bold, stylized iron hardware, the cornice with "scattered" carved rosettes of various forms, the center cabinet with two paneled doors, the side cabinets each with two paneled doors over four graduated drawers, paneled sides, the base on straight legs; bearing applied labels inscribed, "From Maple & Co./ Limited/ London & Paris." History of the Gothic Revival, 1872, where an in-situ line drawing is illustrated. Cooper, J., Victorian & Edwardian Furniture & Interiors, Thames & Hudson, London, 1987, p. 133, pl. 304 where the above line drawing is also illustrated; and p. 134, pl. 306 where the comparable settle at Cragside is illustrated (in a painting by H.H. Emmerson). Note: Nesfield designed a similar pair of settles for the dining room at Cragside, William George Armstrong's country house in Rothbury, Northumberland, which he extended, with Richard Norman Shaw, in 1870-1872. These are the only other settles of this style known to have been made.

          Folio: [14] pp.; 100 pl. (some lvs disbound includ. title, foxing but more to the 1st lvs). - First edition ill. with 100 full-page plates drawn by Nesfield (1835-1888) who designed several houses in Britain in the revived "Old English" and "Queen Anne" styles during the 1860s and 1870s. He was also an interior designer and painter. His vivid sketches are mainly of the major early Gothic cathedrals of Northern France, e.g. Amiens, Bayeux, Chartres, Mont St-Michel, Sens, etc.
