Michail Vasil'evic Nesterov Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1862 - d. 1942

Mikhail Vasilyevich Nesterov (31 May [O.S. 19 May] 1862, Ufa – 18 October 1942, Moscow) was a Russian and Soviet painter; associated with the Peredvizhniki and Mir Iskusstva. He was one of the first exponents of Symbolist art in Russia.

He was born to a strongly patriarchal merchant family. His father was a draper and haberdasher, but always had a strong interest in history and literature. As a result, he was sympathetic to his son's desire to be an artist, but insisted that he acquire practical skills first and, in 1874, he was sent to Moscow where he enrolled at the Voskresensky Realschule.

In 1877, his counselors suggested that he transfer to the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he studied with Pavel Sorokin, Illarion Pryanishnikov and Vasily Perov,[1] who was his favorite teacher. In 1879, he began to participate in the school's exhibitions. Two years later, he entered the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, where he worked with Pavel Chistyakov. He was disappointed at the teaching there and returned to Moscow, only to find Perov on his deathbed, so he took lessons from Alexei Savrasov.[2]

After a brief stay in Ufa, where he met his future wife, Maria, he returned to Moscow and studied with Vladimir Makovsky.[1] While creating a series of historical paintings, he supported himself doing illustrations for magazines and books published by Alexei Stupin [ru], including a collection of fairy tales by Pushkin. In 1885, he was awarded the title "Free Artist" and married, against his parent's wishes. The following year, his wife died after giving birth to his daughter, Olga.[2] Several of his works from this period feature his wife's image.

His first major success came with his painting, "The Hermit" which was shown at the seventeenth exhibition of the Peredvizhniki in 1889. It was purchased by Pavel Tretyakov and the money enabled Nesterov to take an extended trip to Austria, Germany, France and Italy. Upon returning, his painting, "The Vision to the Youth Bartholomew", the first in a series of works on the life of Saint Sergius, was shown at the eighteenth Peredvizhniki exhibition and also purchased by Tretyakov. This series would eventually include fifteen large canvases and occupy him for fifty years.

Religious art: In 1890, Adrian Prakhov, who was overseeing work at St Volodymyr's Cathedral, became familiar with Nesterov's paintings and invited him to participate in creating murals and icons there. After some hesitation, he agreed, then travelled to Rome and Istanbul to acquaint himself with Byzantine art.[2] This project would take twenty-two years to complete. Although it brought him great popularity, he apparently came to feel that the images required were too clichéd and beneath his dignity as an artist, so he occasionally introduced some minor innovations, such as setting portraits of saints in a recognizable landscape.
The Annunciation, Marfo-Mariinsky Convent.

Despite this, he undertook other religious commissions. In 1898, Grand Duke George Alexandrovich asked him to work at the Alexander Nevsky church in Abastumani.[2] He spent six years there, off and on, creating 50 small murals and the iconostasis, but was dissatisfied with the results. He was apparently much more pleased with later work at the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent. He refused to work on the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Warsaw, because he did not approve of building an Orthodox cathedral in a predominantly Catholic city.[3]

In 1901, he wanted to deepen his spiritual appreciation of the monastic life, so he spent some time at the Solovetsky Monastery on the coast of the White Sea.[2] He painted numerous works there and the influence of his visit could be seen in his canvases for many years after. He was also inspired by the novels of Pavel Ivanovich Melnikov, dealing with the lives of the Old Believers in the Volga Region. In 1902, he married Ekaterina Vasilyeva, whom he had met admiring his works at an exhibition.

Later years: In 1905, after the Revolution began, he joined the Union of the Russian People, an extreme right-wing nationalist party that supported the Tsar.[citation needed] As a result, he was in some danger after the October Revolution. In 1918, he moved to Armavir, where he became ill and was unable to work. He returned to Moscow in 1920 and was forced to give up religious painting, although he continued to work on his Saint Sergius series in private. From then until his death, he painted mostly portraits; notably Ivan Ilyin, Ivan Pavlov, Otto Schmidt, Sergei Yudin, Alexey Shchusev and Vera Mukhina.[1]

In 1938, toward the end of the Great Purge, his son-in-law, Vladimir Schroeter, a prominent lawyer, was accused of being a spy and shot. His daughter was sent to a prison camp in Zhambyl, where she was brutally interrogated before being released. He was also arrested and held for two weeks at Butyrka Prison.[2]

In 1941, he was awarded the Stalin Prize for his portrait of Pavlov (created in 1935). It was one of the first given to an artist. Shortly after, he received the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. As the war progressed, his health and financial situation deteriorated rapidly. He had a stroke while working on his painting "Autumn in the Village" and died at Botkin Hospital [ru].

His unfinished memoirs, which he had begun in 1926, were published later that year under the title "Bygone Days". In 1962, he was honored with a postage stamp. In 1996, his likeness appeared on the 50 Ural franc banknote and, in 2015, a monument to him was unveiled at the Bashkir Nesterov art museum in Ufa.

Thence by descent. Acquired from the above by the present owner in the 1980s. Private collection, Europe. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the expert Yu. Chaikina. Authenticity has also been confirmed by the expert I. Shibanova. Literature: P. Klimov, Mikhail Vasilievich Nesterov. Catalogue raisonné: zhivopis, grafika, Moscow, Simvoly, 2019, p. 342, No. 2063, illustrated and listed. Mikhail Nesterov’s Ballad, painted in the 1920s, continues a remarkable gallery of elegiac images begun in the 1890s, wherein nature blends harmoniously with a lyrical human figure. Over the most fruitful twenty years of his artistic career, Nesterov created a whole novel in pictures about the fate of young woman. He explored the theme of personal sadness, tinged with happy memories, arising from the death of his first wife, and drew inspiration from the Pavel Melnikov-Pechersky’s twin novels In T he Forest s and On T he Hills. The 1917 October Revolution and early years of Soviet rule put the middle-aged Nesterov and many admirers of his work in a difficult position. It became obvious that the range of topics that habitually enthused Nesterov and his refined patrons – the search for God, the quiet monastic life, and the secluded beauty of the Russian landscape – were at odds with the new State ideology. A difficult financial situation and an uncertain future forced Nesterov to repeat his old canvases endlessly to make ends meet. A further reason was that his patrons were just as melancholy and confused and wanted to perpetuate the memory of Nesterov’s image of the “Russian soul”– seeking a different way of life that prepared for catharsis through suffering amid the total purity of its “sacred” humility. Sometimes, when created in such circumstances, the repetition of and variations on earlier motifs proved to be almost more inspirational than the originals. Ballad also came into being as the continuation and development of an old theme. It is based on a landscape that Nesterov had painted near the farm at Knyaginino circa 1910s. He was very fond of this little village near Kharkov, which belonged to his friend Princess Natalia Yashvil, and lived there with his family for many years. After the Revolution Nesterov began to see his memories of Knyaginino as a symbol of a happy past. He described the farm at Knyaginino as a "slice of paradise. It had an uninterrupted orchard with two lakes.... The marvellous Malorossian house was furnished in the English style. Apart from short breaks, we lived there for nine years – nine wonderful, unforgettable years... .” By reverting to a previous work and peopling it with his usual figures – a girl in a traditional Russian dress crowned with flowers and gazing pensively at the sky, and a man rowing a boat across a lake – Nesterov gave the composition a characteristically lyrical mood. The painting forms part of his long narrative about a lonely female soul, full of inner beauty and sadness, seeking an outlet for her restless impulses. While creating a new poetic image Nesterov varied the main motif of the cycle’s well-known paintings O n t he Hills, Abandoned, The Nightingale Sings, Wayfarers and Sisters, and interprets once more the idea of harmony between the mood of the human soul and the natural world surrounding it. According to Nesterov’s friend Sergei Durylin (1886–1954), the prominent writer, “just as Turgenev created his own female image by depicting Asya, Liza and their sisters and friends, and we only have to say ‘Turgenev’s girl’ for a younger sister of Pushkin’s Tatyana to take shape in our minds, so it is enough to say ‘Nesterov’s girl’ for the living image of a country maiden to appear before us – a poetic image inseparable from silent sadness.” Nesterov’s eldest daughter Olga Nesterova-Shreter (1886–1973) was to recall that “in his images of women, my father would always prefer moments of spiritual loneliness, sorrow or a sense of doom.” Fate was to burden the Nesterov family with many such moments. In 1937 Olga and her husband Viktor Shreter (1885–1938), a lawyer and professor at Moscow University, were arrested at their home on Sivtsev Vrazhek Lane in Nesterov’s presence. His son-in-law was shot. His daughter was sent to a camp as a wife of a ‘Traitor to the Motherland,’ then exiled to Kazakhstan. The painting to be offered at MacDougall’s was a gift from Nesterov to my Olga as a keepsake from her father – presented to her in January 1941, just after her return from exile. As such it has a symbolic resonance all its own. Verso of the present lot Present lot as illustrated in the 2019 catalogue raisonné M. Nesterov, Pond. MIKHAIL NESTEROV (RUSSIAN 1862-1942)

          Est: $5,000 - $7,000

MIKHAIL NESTEROV (RUSSIAN 1862-1942) The Mourning Virgin with Christ, 1910 watercolor and gouache on paper 10.5 x 18 cm (4 1/8 x 7 in.) [sight] signed, dated and dedicated on verso LOT NOTES A prolific, innovative and astute artist, Nesterov frequently returned to religious narratives --Êparticularly visions and visitations -- in rustic Russian settings, as in his most celebrated work, The Vision to the Youth Bartholomew. As a member of both the Peredvizhniki and Mir iskusstva movements, he was influenced by the Realism of the former as well as the Neo-Romanticism of the latter. Where many peredvizhniki depicted the moral depravity of the clergy and where many Mir iskusstva members were more interested in folk than religious motifs and aesthetics, Nesterov imbued his works with an intimate, familiar, yet wondrous spirituality. The present composition is based on the ne rydai meni, mati ( Do not cry for me, Mother) iconographic type, closely related to that of the Akra Tapeinosis, or Entombed Christ, popular in Western Europe. Here, too, the pastoral setting and informal postures of the figures speak to the Realist idiom while traditionally maintaining Christ's halo.
