    Ray Nestor 1888-1989- Portrait of a girl; oil on canvas board, 39.5x29cm: together with a portrait study of a man and a floral still life study, both in oils on canvas, the latter two signed, 55.7x45.746x35.5cm., (3) (part unframed) Note: Ray Nestor 1888-1988. Ray Nestor worked in all mediums, for many years depicting scenes from his beloved Kenya (where he has a permanent exhibition at Moi University), and then, in the latter part of his life, having left Africa and retired to Sussex, images from English life. In 1988 The Fountain Press published a book of his pictures and memoirs 'An African Sketchbook' with an introduction by Elspeth Huxley.The flowerpiece and the horse racing watercolours would date to the time after he returned to England. The portrait is probably from the Kenyan period when he painted principal characters from the famed Muthaiga Club (subject of the film 'White Mischief').

    Ray Nestor 1888-1989- Portrait of a South East Asian lady head and shoulders; oil on canvas, signed, 44.5x34.2cm. Note: Ray Nestor lived for many years in Kenya, drawing and painting the African scenery and wildlife and creating very sensitive pictures of the local Nandi tribespeople. He has a permanent exhibition of his work at Moi University in Kenya. He was also an accomplished portrait artist and carried out a number of portrait commissions for prominent members of the famed Muthaiga Club in Kenya ( subject of the film 'White Mischief'). In 1988 when Nestor was a hundred years old, the Fountain Press published a book of his work 'An African Sketchbook' (Drawings and Watercolours of Kenya by Ray Nestor), with an introduction by Elspeth Huxley. The watercolours of the horse racing subjects would have been done after he retired back to the UK and settled in Sussex. Provenance: The family of the artist
