Netscher, Caspar (1639-1684) (style/ surroundings of). (Portrait of Jane Lane, lady Fisher, holding the crown, partly covering it with a veil).

            Est: €300 - €500

Netscher, Caspar (1639-1684) (style/ surroundings of). (Portrait of Jane Lane, lady Fisher, holding the crown, partly covering it with a veil). Drawing, 23,3x19,3 cm., brush and brown and grey ink. = With the collector's mark of the French artist and collector Jean Gigoux (1806-1894) on recto. With an attribution to Caspar Netscher "Gasp. Netscher del." in pencil on verso. With annotation "Mestres Laene" (?) in brush and ink and in different smaller hand "Mestres (...) Laene" in black pen and ink on verso. The covering of the crown is an allusion to aiding king Charles II to escape after the battle of Worcester in 1651. His companion, Lord Henry Wilmot, was at nearby Bentley Hall, the home of Jane's brother, Colonel John Lane. Jane had obtained a travel pass to visit a pregnant family member in Bristol. Charles accompanied her disguised as her manservant. They eventually reached the coast at Trent, where Charles set sail for France. She fled to France later that year after her part in the escape was discovered, joining the Court in exile. She returned to England after the Restoration. The drawing is very similar to the (mirrored) portrait in the National Portrait Gallery by an anonymous artist showing her also covering the crown with a veil, although there are also various small differences, especially in the background. There is also a portrait of her with very similar features in the collection of Moseley Old Hall, Staffordshire (National Trust Collection). Charles II did invite Caspar Netscher to England, but it is uncertain whether Netscher ever went. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE LXXXIX.

Modelled on CASPAR NETSCHER (1639 - The Hague, 1684). Late 19th - early 20th century. "Woman Feeding a Parrot with a Pageboy". Oil on panel. Size: 32 x 27 cm; 54 x 48,5 cm (frame). Work that faithfully follows the painting made by Caspar Netscher that belongs to the collection of the National Gallery of Art of Washington, entitled "A woman feeding a parrot with a page". The piece presents a large trompe l'oeil window showing a pale-skinned young woman standing in a stone niche, with a parrot perched on her finger as she gazes at the viewer. The woman's hands are raised to chest level, and she balances the blue parrot on the index finger of her far hand while her other hand holds an indistinct white object. Her body is tilted to our left and she looks at us from the corner of her green eyes under faint eyebrows. Her round face has a small nose, flushed cheeks and her coral-red mouth curves into a slight smile. Her honey blonde hair is tied back at the back of her head with curly locks that frame her face and fall over her shoulders. She wears a golden-brown dress adorned with a narrow ruffle of white fabric along the low neckline that reveals her cleavage. The bird faces the woman and picks up some food, with a dark claw. A light-skinned boy stands in deep shadow just to the woman's right. He looks at her and holds a silver tray in both hands. All the figures are inside a light brown archway that opens out beyond a ledge, reaching down to the woman's knees. A carpet patterned with stylised flowers in ruby red, burnt orange, blue-green-blue, white and black is piled up and hanging over the parapet to our right. The carpet partially covers an inscription on the front face of the niche that reads: "M. DO", with the O cut out. A fringed copper-coloured curtain hangs from the upper right-hand side of the arch and is attached to the inner edge of the opening to create a swag. The woman is brightly lit from the upper left, and the space behind her and the child is inky black.

The elegant figures, the refined technique and the quality of this work conform to the style of Caspar Netscher, the most popular painter in The Hague. Particularly notable are the settings and backgrounds that he used in his portraits, which involve sumptuous curtains and hangings; or which, as here, take the form of landscapes. The gestures, the richness of the clothes, and the woman’s jewels suggest that these individuals belonged to the wealthy, fashionably dressed classes, indicated by the man’s long wig and the French details of his dress.
