      Adolf Neumann (1825 - 1884 ) after Georg Oswald May (1738 Offenbach on the Main - 1816 Frankfurt on the Main): Portrait of the German poet Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, c. 1860, Steel engraving Technique: Steel engraving on Paper Inscription: Lower middle signed in the printing plate: "G. O. May gem | Ad. Neumann gest.". Lower middle inscribed in the printing plate: "G. E. Lessing". Date: c. 1860 Description: Bust to the right in a coat with shirt and lace ruffle, the hair curled at the sides and tied into a plait. Person: Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729 Kamenz - 1781 Brunswick) Important poet of the Enlightenment. With his dramas and his theoretical writings, which are above all committed to the idea of tolerance, this Enlightenment philosopher showed an essential path for the further development of the theatre and had a lasting influence on the public impact of literature.
