      Albert Neumann (1895 - 1956 ): Portrait of Georg Friedrich Rudolph Theodor Herwegh (1817 - 1875), c. 1920, Woodcut Technique: Woodcut on Paper Date: c. 1920 Description: Print (newspaper clipping) after a photograph inscribed: "Georg Herwegh. After a photograph, in the possession of Mrs Emma Herwegh in Baden-Baden", signed lower right in the image "A. Neumann X.A."; text on verso. Rare depiction of Georg Herwegh in middle years. Georg Herwegh is sitting at a small table with his legs crossed. The right arm resting on the table supports the head. He wears a full beard and a black cap. Another cloak covers his figure. Georg Friedrich Rudolph Theodor Herwegh (1817 - 1875) was an important German poet of the Vormärz. In 1841 he became famous with his "Poems of a Living Man", which was a polemical counterpart to Pückler-Muskau's "Letters of a Dead Man".
