      Mar. 08, 2021

      BARBARA NEUSTADT (1922-1998) - BEGGAR'S SONG

      Est: $700 - $900

Lot 16 Barbara Neustadt (1922-1998) Beggar's Song (1954) Etching, engraving, aquatint Signed lower right, Edition Artist proof, edition unknown 9.875” x 7.875” inches No inches Donated by Charles M. Young of Charles M. Young Fine Prints & Drawings LLC This item ships from NY 11201 Neustadt’s work was experimental throughout her career, with her printmaking including both making and casting paper. Neustadt was as equally as interested in learning about the printmaking process and its experimental nature as she was in creating specific compositions and effects using that knowledge. Her art is exhibited in notable institutions such as the National Gallery of Art, the Library of Congress, Columbia University, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As Armstrong Fine Art states, “Her prints can be found in public collections across the country, and considering their rarity, it is a special treat when one happens upon a print by Barbara Neustadt for sale.”,,Neustadt’s etching, Beggar’s Song, has abstracted images in juxtaposition with one another, balancing in tones of gray. When one looks at the piece, one cannot help but wonder about the motivation behind it and the beings potentially depicted. It is almost hypnotic, and it feels fully balanced across the 9 7/8 in” x 7 7/8 ” background. The desperate mood, represented through the shades of gray, locks the viewer in, making them unable to pull away from the piece.,,~ Marie Kessel, Recent Graduate of New York University Gallatin School of Individualized Study, Bachelor of Arts in Art Law, Center for Art Law Spring 2021 Graduate Intern. Artist's Biography Barbara Neustadt, sometimes called the printmaker’s printmaker, excelled in printmaking and painting. She was born on June 6, 1922 in Davenport, Iowa, but she spent the first few years of her life in New York City. Neustadt spent most of her childhood in Chicago, where she began taking private art lessons at the age of fourteen. She earned her undergraduate degree at Smith College, and she continued her education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Chicago, where she received a Master’s of Arts in History of Culture., ,Throughout her career, Neustadt studied with artists such as Arnold Blanch and Ben Shahn. In the fall of 1952, Neustadt moved to New York City, where she worked with artists such as Bob Blackburn, Michael Ponce de Leon, and Margaret Lowengrund in lithography. Neustadt moved to Woodstock, New York in 1967, and she founded the Pleiades Press/Studio Art Graphic Art Centre. She eventually moved her studio to Bradenton, Florida.
