        FRANK NEWBOULD (1887-1950) SWIFT / WORLD'S BEST CYCLES. Circa 1930s. 59¼x39 inches, 150½x99 cm. Chorley & Pickersgill, Leeds. Condition A-: minor repaired tears and restoration in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds. Frank Newbould did extensive work for the London Underground, London & North Eastern Railway, the Great Western Railway, the Cunard Line and the Orient Line. During the Second World War he designed posters for the British Government. Throughout his career he designed very few commercial posters. In 1896, the Swift Cycle Company emerged from what was originally the Coventry Sewing Machine Company; the adaptive brand soon shifted into the motorbike and automobile industries as well. For a time, the Swift company was the second biggest cycle manufacturer in Great Britain. This Swift rider is donning his tennis racket in its rectangular wooden press, the shape of which suggests a date from the 1930s. Rare.

The daily sporting life in one of England's spa towns is suggested by the composition of an equestrian, golfer and tennis player on a manicured path between tall trees. In 1926, Frank Newbould was one of five artists contracted to work exclusively for the LNER for three years. He also worked for the Great Western Railway, The Orient Line (shipping company) and the Belgian Railways. Furness vol. 4, p. 9.

Great design by the notable British poster artist Frank Newbould (1887-1951) of a strong and proud British lion above the stylised text. Good condition, repaired loss and tears, light folds. rank Newbould (24 September 1887 - 1951) was an English poster artist, born in Bradford to John Newbould (1856-1944), chemist, from Pateley Bridge, and Sara Ellen, née Robinson (1856-1941), also from Bradford. He was their only child. Educated at Bradford College of Art and Camberwell School of Art, he worked mostly in London from the interwar period specialising in travel posters. His clients included the Empire Marketing Board; London Transport and its predecessors; the London & North Eastern, Great Western and London, Midland and Scottish Railways, and the Orient and Cunard Lines. In 1942 he joined the War Office as assistant to Abram Games, where he produced eleven posters, including a series Your Britain, Fight for it Now. In 1926, Frank Newbould was one of five artists contracted to work exclusively for the LNER (the others were Tom Purvis, Austin Cooper, Frank Mason and Fred Taylor). The contract lasted for three years. It was most likely during this time that Newbould designed this poster showing some of the architecture in Amsterdam, with a view of the Oude Kerk (Old Church). Newbould did extensive work for the London & North Eastern Railway, but he also worked for the Great Western Railway, The Orient Line (shipping company) and the Belgian Railways. An extraordinary rendition of a Scottish vista of the town of Fort William. Newbould's atmospheric representation of the landscape is very much in the style of a Chinese watercolor painting, in which each horizontal depth-of-field section is a different shade. Frank Newbould did extensive work for the London & North Eastern Railway, as well as the Great Western Railway, The Orient Line and the Belgian Railways. Adept at rendering both architecture and people, Newbould composed his colorful posters with a strong graphic eye.

He designed several posters promoting travel to the continent, including images for Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Nuremberg and The Belgian Coast. Here, he captures a wonderful snippet of Berlin street life, in which elegant couples stroll down the boulevard, gentlemen enjoy the cafes, and automobiles and distinguished buildings line the avenue. Running through the center of Berlin, "Unter den Linden" was one of the grandest streets in Germany. Its name ("Under the Lindens") is derived from the distinctive trees that lined it. Rare. We have not found another copy at auction in 25 years. Voyage p. 143, Furness 8, p. 100.

        FRANK NEWBOULD (1887-1951) BADEN - BADEN / VIA HARWICH TO THE BLACK FOREST. Circa 1930. 40x24 3/4 inches, 101 1/2x63 cm. Eyre & Spottiswoode Ltd, London. Condition A-: minor creases and abrasions in margins and image; small loss in lower left corner. Frank Newbould did extensive work for the London & North Eastern Railway, and he also worked for the Great Western Railway, The Orient Line and the Belgian Railways. In 1926, he was one of five artists contracted to work exclusively for the LNER; the others were Tom Purvis, Austin Cooper, Frank Mason and Fred Taylor. The contract lasted for three years. Adept at depicting both architecture and people, Newbould composed his colorful posters with a strong graphic eye. Not in Furness vol. 8.

The Silver Jubilee was the LNER's first streamlined train, followed soon after by the Coronation. "These trains, with their own locomotives and carriages, were highly distinctive and extremely popular. Great design by the notable British poster artist Frank Newbould (1887-1951) of a strong and proud British lion above the stylised text. Good condition, repaired loss and tears, light folds. rank Newbould (24 September 1887 – 1951) was an English poster artist, born in Bradford to John Newbould (1856-1944), chemist, from Pateley Bridge, and Sara Ellen, née Robinson (1856-1941), also from Bradford. He was their only child. Educated at Bradford College of Art and Camberwell School of Art, he worked mostly in London from the interwar period specialising in travel posters. His clients included the Empire Marketing Board; London Transport and its predecessors; the London & North Eastern, Great Western and London, Midland and Scottish Railways, and the Orient and Cunard Lines. In 1942 he joined the War Office as assistant to Abram Games, where he produced eleven posters, including a series Your Britain, Fight for it Now.
