        Mary Newcomb,  British 1922-2008 -  Carp;  watercolour and pencil on paper, signed with initials lower right 'MN', 33.5 x 28.5 cm (ARR)  Note: this is a classic example of Mary Newcombs celebrated work, combining an innovative, faux-naïve approach to composition with a distinct use of colour, seen here in the dusky-palette. The scene is alive with the artists almost child-like delight at the natural world. In 2021 a major retrospective for the artist was held at Compton Verney near Warwick. The museum holds a large collection of British Folk Art, which was originally gifted by Andreas Kalman, the director of Crane Kalman Gallery which exhibited her work since the 1970s. Her work is also held by the Tate, the Ingram Collection and the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts.

Ha vissuto in campagna per tutta la sua vita e il suo lavoro è notoriamente incentrato sullo stile di vita rurale e sulla natura che ne è parte integrante. Mary Newcomb è entrata tardi nel mondo dell'arte, ma da sempre è stata interessata alla natura. Si è laureata in Scienze Naturali all'Università di Reading nel 1943 ed ha insegnato scienze e matematica al liceo di Bath. Nel 1950, Mary sposa Godfrey Newcomb e si trasferisce a Norfolk.
