Rock Newcomb (Born 1945) "Raven Ruins Beauty" Acrylic on Panel. Inscribed on reverse "Raven Ruins, where this exquisite Matsaki olla was excavated, is located in Eastern-Central Arizona, 20 or so miles south of St. Johns, Arizona. The ruins are located on a bluff overlooking the Little Colorado River. This site was occupied from 900 A.D. or earlier through 1550 A.D. It was a central trade community which had the luxury of an abundance of growing crops which were traded for life's necessities. The Matsaki olla I painted is considered to be very early Zuni in origin. Todays Zuni reservation is approximately 100 miles north of Raven Ruins. This piece is referred to as Matsaki Brown-on-Buff." Artist: Rock Newcomb | b. 1945 Title: Hopi Classics Signed l/r: Rock Newcomb © Media: Acrylic on panel Dimensions: 16 by 12 inches Condition: Very Good Condition details: This painting is in very good condition. Close inspection under ultraviolet light reveals normal fluorescence of artist's pigments, and no signs of restoration. The piece is framed in a rustic light brown frame. The frame is in very good condition with normal wear. Verso on panel: “Hopi Classics” features and old Katsina, circa A.D. 1900, and a lovely bowl of the same time period. The Katsina is very weathered with the undercoat of white kaolin clay showing in the actual light red-brown cottonwood in evidence. Much of the original yellow and blue paints have totally faded with the exception of the “blossoms” on the head of the flute katsina. It is in the collection of the Amerind foundation museum in southeast Arizona. The bowl is a very unique shape reminding me of the head of a bear.
